I had to wear very thick cotton overalls for the navy swimming test, when it is a bit of a short fit moving your arms is awkward.Count Steer wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 11:14 amWonder why sailors trousers were always 'bell-bottoms'? Possibly easier to get off? Or designed to not prolong the agony if you went in the water....Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 11:09 amBack in the day when I was first learning to swim I had to take some clothes to the pool for a personal safety test. Get out of shirt, get out of trousers, and then use trousers as a flotation device, all in deep water. I grabbed an old, and by then deeply unfashionable pair of flared denim jeans and jumped into 7 foot of water. Fcuk me, is it difficult to swim with flared jeans!Noggin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 18, 2022 9:14 pm I'm drying out after walking from the bar to a mates car and from being dropped off to walking home. Not far either time, but BIG rain!!
Two things - my walking boots are not water proof
HTF did people in the 70's manage with flares!! Cos it was cooler tonight I grabbed a pair of jeans that I turned into flares when I had the knee/leg brace on. They are quite pretty really, but when they get wet, well DAMN they are tough to walk in!! Not certain how I managed to get home without tripping over them!! Definitely relegating them to cold DRY days
(We just used pyjamas for the swimming tests).

Just watching Tom Pidcock win the European Championships MTB race. I think he'll probably go out after it and do a proper workout

The pack following him looked right grumpy as he disappeared into the distance.

Log day here, 2 cubic yards of seasoned hardwood delivered roadside to top up the log store. It’s too bloody warm to be shifting that lot to the other end of the garden and then stacking it all, but it’s done now.
I’m hoping 3 cube will be enough for the winter, but who knows…

The first time I saw two yards dumped on my drive I decided the log burner was for special occasions only.Silly Car wrote: ↑Sat Aug 20, 2022 1:18 pm Log day here, 2 cubic yards of seasoned hardwood delivered roadside to top up the log store. Loud feminine scream from the pool
I poke my head out to have a look.
There's a snake in the pool!
Ok, it's about 6-8" long, but, definitely a snake.
Guess we'll be moving soon then!
Anyone want a nice, isolated, converted French barn

Hmmm...with the 'snake infestation discount' I might take it off your hands.

We had similar.
She: "There's a snake in the house!"
Me: "Where?"
She: "Over there!"
Me: "Looks like a worm". <Fetches glasses>. "Oh yeah it's a snake".
I've seen decent size ones in the countryside but they seem to leave our house and garden well enough alone, and we don't have a pol for them to fall in.

Re: A right now thread
We had a snake in the house a while ago, only a little one. We think it arrived in the trouser turn-ups of a gardener/landscaper that we'd got round to quote for some work! (Baby adder I think). Saw another outside the kitchen door recently. Best thing though is we have 'slowies' They are absolutelyDefTrap wrote: ↑Fri Aug 26, 2022 10:47 amWe had similar.

(Chlorine in a pool is for snakes but some do seem to like ponds and kids paddling pools ).

'So if you could just pop the plant pot onto the decking'
She said casually.
'so it's not staying in the garden then?' I ask, imploringly. There's 160l of compost and whatever was on the tree roots in there!
