Have you not seen the problem of climbing rents due to a shortage of landlords? Taxing those greedy landlords out of the market worked out so well for tenants.

It was a stupid policy and is (IMO) a major part of a lot of the UKs problems, the policy of allocating council houses to useless tossers hasn't helped either.

My parents couldn't get a council house in 1965 because my father didn't have a job that payed enough to pay the rent, so we lived in a caravan until 1974 when we could afford to pay the rent on a council house, it was like a palace compared to the caravan and the estate it was on was a nice place to live (and still is).

I'm guessing many locals are priced out of 'normal' renting by tourism? When I lived on Guernsey it was a look into protectionism with the local and open markets. But it made sense and still does to prevent locals being forced out of the market

The government don’t do joined up thinking.

Take ethanol production.* First the government give incentives. Companies start investing in ethanol plants, the government then backtrack and the plants get shelved. Then the government announce E10 fuel out of the blue and there’s no ethanol to add to the fuel.

No investor will touch ethanol with a shitty stick due to government’s inability to have any sort of consistent policy.

In the US the policy has been consistent from the start for fuel security reasons and they have a thriving industry.

That and Councils offloading their housing stock to newly formed housing associations often against the wishes of their tenants.

I remember our Council holding a referendum on status quo or move housing stock to housing associations.The result, overwhelming majority wanted Council to retain control of it’s housing stock.

Guess what, they went ahead with it anyway, cue more people buying their places once the rents started creeping up and the service deteriorating.

Councils are shit at maintaining stuff. Some Housing Associations are also shit, but some are ok.
