Chain and lock: Pragmasis

Since my new bike is worth a bit more than the Tracer (RiP) I thought I'd better upgrade my security. So after a meticulous five minutes of googling I came across this test report:

I needed something reasonably hefty for locking the bike at home, rather than in town, so weight and bulk wasn't an issue, but I also didn't want to spend £200 plus if I could help it. So I opted for the Pragmasis Protector 16mm with Roundlock:

So far it's worked amazingly well - the bike hasn't been nicked. But then it's only been in use for 5 days.
More seriously, I got a good vibe when looking at the company's website, and that was reinforced when the product arrived. It's really solid and well-finished, and I can see how the roundlock would be hard for a thief to break. The ability to shorten the chain by passing one link through another is also a good feature, as you can keep the chain off the ground. It wouldn't resist an angle grinder attack, but given where it's located that would attract too much attention (I hope).

All in all, I'm pleased so far and it appears to be very good value for money. Anyone else got any of their kit?

Nope, I went with Almax in deference to Zanx and the work he published.
Long story short, bloody good kit, piss poor customer service.

I had to buy a lock for mine and it must be SRA 'level' (can't remember the word). The first I ordered arrived and I was happy that I could give back the lock I've borrowed. Only trouble was that once I 'opened' the disclock, I couldn't put it back together to lock it again. I managed it once in about 20 tries, took it to a bar to meet friends and no one there could do it either (so at least it wasn't me being stoopid!).

Sent it back and currently waiting for the replacement. Can't remember the brand, just needed an SRA standard jobbie

Long story short, bloody good kit, piss poor customer service.

I would have to agree with that- great products- but woeful at delivery. Very keen to promise stuff - not very good at action.

i bought one to lock up my push bikes. didnt really think what i was doing, the chain is long and 3/4" wire diameter - i can barely lift it. got a ground anchor too, and a massive lock. jobs a good one. should have gone smaller

I went with an Almax after A, Zanx's work on VD back in the day and B, I was offered one for £50 !

I have a Pragmasis 19mm chain and one of their roundlocks. Used with a ground anchor. Great kit, thankfully not had to use their customer service.

I think mr longbeard was referring to Almax customer service, wasn't he? Slightly wish I'd gone for the 19mm one, as I won't be carrying it around. They even have a 22mm one, I see. I have a feeling things have moved on since the days of Zanx's tests, as iirc the Almax was then 16mm only. Might be wrong, though.

They have indeed moved on and whilst Almax still do 16mm they also do 19, 22 and even 25mm chains! They are bloody heavy though!

Amazon they ain't and delivery can take a while as they are still a relatively small company staff wise. But Alex is still super cheery and ever-knowledgeable if you want advice and myth busting tales etc. I went with Almax as i try, wherever possible, to support small British businesses.
