An estimated 40,000,000 to 50,000,000 people died during World War II. Among the Allied powers, the U.S.S.R. suffered the greatest total number of dead: perhaps 18,000,000. An estimated 5,800,000 Poles died, which was 20 percent of Poland's prewar population.

Lots of those Poles were Jews, and, as for Russia - Yes, they suffered huge losses, and yes, they are also behaving like Nazis. Doesn't excuse Israel though, or anybody else.
Unfortunately, like Skub said.

I can only assume you've done the research that proves those who have left Russia since February 2022 are being resettled in annexed territory?slowsider wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:59 amOh the irony.Hoonercat wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:43 am According to the BBC, 20,000 of Russia's 160,000 Jews have left for Israel since the start of the war, with many concerned that if Russia needs an 'internal enemy', they will be in the firing line. I've also read that there is an 8 month waiting list with the Jewish Agency in Russia (sorry, can't find the link). Russia are currently attempting to have the agency closed down or at the very least have their operations limited, in what many observers are calling an attempt to 'stop the brain drain'.

They move to Israel and need a place to live. The state annexes land illegally and encourages settlers to occupy it. The current owners resist, but curiously this time the West doesnt send arms or impose sanctions on the occupiers.

You'll have to re-read what I said... 'encourages settlers', who are likely to be more zealous than refugees.Hoonercat wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 4:35 pmI can only assume you've done the research that proves those who have left Russia since February 2022 are being resettled in annexed territory?slowsider wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:59 amOh the irony.Hoonercat wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:43 am According to the BBC, 20,000 of Russia's 160,000 Jews have left for Israel since the start of the war, with many concerned that if Russia needs an 'internal enemy', they will be in the firing line. Russia has a history of behaving like Nazis long before the term was ever invented.Skub wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:35 pmRegardless of nationality and given the opportunity, that appears to be default human behaviour.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:28 pm Funny that, those that suffered most from the Nazis now behaving like Nazis.

You replied to my quote about Russian Jews returning to Israel with 'They move to Israel and need a place to live', commenting on the irony, so clearly you are referring to the same people. So let's rephrase the question: I can only assume you've done the research that proves those who have left Russia since February 2022 are being encouraged to resettle in annexed territory?

You highlighted the wrong sentence. It wasnt a clause of the first sentence. And 'returning to Israel'??
The irony is that they are fleeing for safety from one state to another which is doing essentially the same to another group.

That's an irrelevance of course. Stalin topped a sizeable number of his own people without the excuse of a war.Count Steer wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:37 pm . . . the U.S.S.R. suffered the greatest total number of dead: perhaps 18,000,000.

Re: Will Russia invade the Ukraine?
Not totally irrelevant even if you're ignoring suffering not directly attributable to the Nazis though. 5.7M Russian civilians (excl. 1.3M Jews) and 2.8-3.3M Soviet PoWs died in the holocaust. Which IS a significant part of the 18M.Yambo wrote: ↑Mon Aug 22, 2022 8:14 amThat's an irrelevance of course. I was being sarcastic.
If the leader of a country like Stalin doesn't fuss too much about millions of deaths of his own countrymen, why should we?

And the deaths of millions of Ukrainians.
Given the Ukrainian Holodomor it's unbelievable that Putin evidently thought that Ukrainians would welcome a Russian invasion with open arms.

The Holodomor's Death Toll
The Ukrainian famine—known as the Holodomor, a combination of the Ukrainian words for “starvation” and “to inflict death”—by one estimate claimed the lives of 3.9 million people, about 13 percent of the population. And, unlike other famines in history caused by blight or drought, this was caused when a dictator wanted both to replace Ukraine’s small farms with state-run collectives and punish independence-minded Ukrainians who posed a threat to his totalitarian authority.

We're all going to die, all 7 billion of us. It's only the timing and manner of death that has any importance to some people.
Over-population isn't a good thing and early death may be one way of controlling it except that it seems after mass extinctions of humans we have population increases.
Killing off tax payers in any great number should be counter productive from a government viewpoint.

Re: Will Russia invade the Ukraine?
Russia has a population problem and Putin has reintroduced a Soviet medal (Mother Heroine) for women that have ten children. It might have helped if he hadn't driven millions of educated people out of Russia this year.Yambo wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 7:54 amWe're all going to die, all 7 billion of us. Re: Will Russia invade the Ukraine?
I think that worldwide, educated people have fewer children. Educated people are not going to be swayed into having more by a medal. The less well educated may well be swayed by a medal and have more children.
It wouldn't surprise me if driving educated people out of the country was a plan of Putin's.
