Note, it was only a test drive... but yup, colour me impressed. The Kuga has moved up the list to the top in terms of choices.

It's not going to be THAT Kuga as it's £14,000 and as much as i had a laugh with the lads in there, they're not dropping £3000 on it lol.

But it's likely it's a Kuga...

I had a diesel auto Kuga. It went because of the notorious throttle lag. Hopefully, they've cured that but check it out. FWIW they are AWD not 4x4?

I think arguably you're more of a 'driver' than me mate.

Can't go wrong with a Kuga - decent enough quality, cheap to run and repair.
My missus had one years back (2014 to 2017, diesel Zetec spec) - never had an issue with it in 30k miles, replaced it with a decent spec VW Tiguan and the Kuga was a nicer place to be.

iirc most of them are only front wheel drive. The AWD ones cost a premium and are much rarer.

Freelander 2s are not bad cars so don't believe the horror stories connected with Landrovers.
I have a 2009, had it 11 years and it is very reliable and very comfortable.
Apart from servicing, only thing it needed was drivers rear door lock last year as the central locking stopped working on that one door.
It has never gave me any other problems in that time, unlike my 200 discovery, 300 discovery, td5 discovery and my discovery 3 I owned before this one.
I have a few friends with freelander 2s as well and they have been trouble free.

I had to spend money on the other ones but nothing out of the ordinary.
But they did need more than normal servicing,

I think very few 4x4s have locking diffs now, it's all controlled by brakes. I've seen a mate with brake control system on a Freelander2 struggle in the same place my Jeep with 3 locking diffs struggled, it did pretty well and the tow rope I was taunting him with wasn't required.
Given how awful locked diffs are to drive with on normal ground and how fiddly they are to operate on many Jap 4x4s I wouldn't bother with full locking diffs unless I was working on a farm.

I think the full fat Range Rovers and the Defender still have proper locking diffs. BMW always wanted to make the RR use an X5 derived structure, but RR managed to stick with 'proper' off road stuff. Now they're an independent company again they can do what they like.

But yeah, it's probably on a few hard core vehicles which are still proper locking diffs. So various LRs, Land Cruisers and a few others.

Defenders only came with a lock in the transfer box, so the front and rear diffs are open. Several Jap 4x4s had a locking rear but a locking front axle has always been unusual. Locking hubs on the front are common but only designed for saving fuel.

Petrol, auto (I don't suppose a modern auto box would have any issues with a light trailer?).

Forgot to add too - majority of my wife's driving in the Kuga was short town journeys and never once had any DPF, EGR etc issues. Don't be put off by a diesel.....

Ever thought of something like a Berlingo/Partner/Doblo/Kangoo that's been modified for wheelchair access? They go for cheap and have lots of strapping down points etc. I'm guessing it's a bit low-rent for you, and cerainly doesn't scream 'cool', but it might do what you want.

What's going to happen to resale values of diesels? My local dealer's best deals are all on diesels and they've started saying stuff like 'can't tempt you with a diesel?' as a bit of patter. I'd have thought the only way is downhill from here. Might seem like a bargain now but in a couple of years I can see them getting v about trade-ins.
