If someone identifies as multiple personalities then are we discriminating against their wishes?

You do realise you missed out the period when they were generally considered to be at their peak - 1967-1972?

Beggars Banquet
Let it Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile on Main Street

First album was excellent, and GHS wasn't bad, but paled into insignificance when compared to the 4 albums that preceded it.

IMHO, of course...

What's the minimum number to make a group, Ed Sheeran in a group of 1?
Would a duet count? Would it still count if they have Scottish accents?
Both are shit so whether they're a band or not is irrelevant

Its probably easier to draw up a list of great bands who aren't British.

Metallica
AC/DC (yeah I know, controversially not British :D)
Guns n Roses, at least at first. Plus Slash is from Stoke IIRC.

Err.....there's gotta be more.

I would have suggested The Clash - but then I remembered Sandinista ...
The Stone Roses would have been brilliant - if they weren't too stoned /coked up to every bother making an effort after the first album.

I liked Beggars Banquet (borrowed it, didn't buy it). I suppose I quite liked the Stones but was never a 'fan'.

The other thing about 'greatests' is a band could be an absolute must-see live and comparatively lack-lustre on vinyl, some could be epic at both and some could be great with the help of a recording studio and a disappointment live.

As for the 'not British' discussion, I'd say Jimi Hendrix Experience was a 'British' band. Formed here, got momentum going here (in the USA they'd be like 'Jimi who?') so he's ours

Edit: A rummage in my record collection reveals that I do actually own Beggar's Banquet (on CD so the 'sleeve' isn't anywhere near as good). I may reassess vis a vis GHS :D

Yeah, the whole 'best' thing is just bollocks. I couldn't possibly say which band or artiste was the 'best'. I'd have endless problems even trying to pick a Desert Island Discs selection; i.e. 8 records. I could probably name 800 tunes I consider amazing, let alone 8.

Idea for a thread, though...?

My post, on page one of this thread and which you all ignored is the right answer.

The Elastic Band, is British. It's better than any other band especially bands that think they make music.

Their longevity, record sales, touring and merchandising profits would rather seem at odds with that claim! :D

Ah, but you see Mr. H., it was meant to be a flippant riposte in order to highlight that which has already been pointed out, that trying to establish the 'Best UK band' is a fool's errand. It's hard enough to establish what a UK band is, let alone grapple with people's pre convictions and myriads of taste in order to find the best, whatever definition of best is.

Therefore, my answer stands: Steps.

Or possibly Black Lace.

Or Jedwood.
Aren't Jedwood very Irish?
I believe so. Not really a band either. And not best at anything.

And there's my point.

I think.
It’s Jedward.

Honestly, you call yourself music fans

I bought the fucker, I think I've listened to it all the way through once, I don't even know where it is now.

I bought every Clash album, none of them are great.
