Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Well for now i've gone with the sensible choice and moved some cash into the 'shit car' fund just in case it has any issues.
I've ordered 2 new front tyres as one is very low, the other isn't exactly brand new. So the QQ will be heading to the Alps in a few weeks.

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
So at the weekend we did another event.. car had the 2 new https://www.michelin.co.uk/auto/tyres/m ... -primacy-4
fitted the day before and were happy... Although they didn't massively quieten the car as i'd slightly hoped.... but i think it's just a slightly noisy car on the road. But i did find myself questioning what a van/something would bring to the discussion.
The only thing really it would have brought was 'somewhere to sit and eat lunch' and to do that it would have to be the Vito Dualiner more than the van itself.

It seems you can flip the rear seats quickly, so they're facing into the van space, which would give a huge area for lunch... But as to whether that's worth £11000 to me, is very much open to debate at the moment. As i say though, doing it in the car works well enough certainly in summer.. i don't know if winter will change that though when it's wet, messy and horrible.

You could add a bit of style and space to the QQ by fitting a roof box

Sounds to me that what you need is something like the QQ but bigger so that you can get all the stuff you want to take in it.
The trouble with commercial vehicles is that cheaper ones are generally knackered and decent ones are expensive

Yeah that's why i was looking at the Q5 and the CRV... they're both a step up in terms of size and 'plushness' too. Both tick a lot of boxes... but... dunno.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 9:02 am Sounds to me that what you need is something like the QQ but bigger so that you can get all the stuff you want to take in it.

I viewed this about 4-6 weeks ago, it's now been dropped by a chunk in price, i guess because it's not sold. It's getting into 'decent VFM' sort of now...

Before I bought a van I looked for cars with extra big boots and there's not much in it, I'd stick the gazebo on roof bars, then you may want a roof box alongside it. If that's still not enough room then no car will be enough, revaluate how much stuff you need to take or decide a van is worth buying.

I don't have roof bar sides, but it's far from a terrible shout i must admit...Mussels wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 9:43 am Before I bought a van I looked for cars with extra big boots and there's not much in it, I'd stick the gazebo on roof bars, then you may want a roof box alongside it. Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Cant see that CR-V solving much. I reckon you'd be better with a bigger MPV like an S-max, Previa, Espace etc. You can take the last row of seats out,, or both rows, to get loads of room.

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Unless we're putting the bikes IN the car, we don't need LOADS more room.... we just need 4-5" more really for Gazebo and spare wheels etc.. We can just about get the gazebo in straight on, but it means putting his seat too far forward. So it goes in at an angle for now, but that makes the loading side of things a bit of a pain.... but honestly i'm being a little picky here.Taipan wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 9:52 am Cant see that CR-V solving much. A lot of my pickiness is because I simply don't really like the QQ, it's an OK place to be and comfortable enough, but it doesn't drive 'nicely' in some ways and the road noise is a little on the high side.... the other aspect is the diesel side of things, which again isn't my favourite due to DPF/EGR stuff, but that was my own mistake when purchasing the QQ this time, i should have gone petrol.

Most SUVs are road noisy, you might prefer something more road biased, a Mondeo estate springs to mind.

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Mondeos have struggled slightly in terms of terrain. The reason being, they're properly long and low. Some of the trails/lanes we go down are ridiculous and with the Mondeo also having a low slung towbar, it did cause us issues getting in and out of places. We almost/did ground out a couple of times... Hence why i sold the previous Mondeo. The QQ has much better ground clearance and a shorter wheelbase which negates those issues.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 10:23 am Most SUVs are road noisy, you might prefer something more road biased, a Mondeo estate springs to mind.

Crew cab van and stick swivel plate in the front seats give you a dining room. Get a caravan

Can't get a motorbike in the back and i don't fancy towing a trailer with a van due to visibility etc... it's like the worst of all worlds.Felix wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 10:56 am Crew cab van and stick swivel plate in the front seats give you a dining room. Get a caravan![]()

Big petrol SUVs are rare unless you're going to go for something mental like a Dodge or Jeepweeksy wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 10:26 amMondeos have struggled slightly in terms of terrain. Even petrol Jeeps are rare, when I bought my Grand Cherokee the only petrol version was the 5l V8.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 1:36 pmBig petrol SUVs are rare unless you're going to go for something mental like a Dodge or Jeepweeksy wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 10:26 amMondeos have struggled slightly in terms of terrain. Depends on the 'big' though. Plenty of Q5s, X-trails, Mazda CX*, CRVs etc...Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 1:36 pmBig petrol SUVs are rare unless you're going to go for something mental like a Dodge or Jeepweeksy wrote: Mon Jul 25, 2022 10:26 amMondeos have struggled slightly in terms of terrain. Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
I wouldn't describe any of them as big, none will have a boot to rival the Mondeo.
