It's also a question of what's available in terms of seats at renewal time. Can't imagine that either Yamaha or Ducati would want JR's asking price on top of their existing rider budget. Anything else and you're signing up for a life off the podium.

At the end of the day, he's putting food on the table, no doubt they offered him enough to be financially secure by the time the contract ends. He's got nowt left to prove, just bank the loot and sail off into retirement.

He tried that on a totally uncompetitive Honda for many many many years. As soon as he got on a good bike he won 6 championships. I can see why he wouldn't want to move. I also suspect he likes staying settled in a team, he stayed with Honda for a long time, far longer than he should.

Was he offered factory Ducati/Yamaha? I can see Bautista and Toprack not wanting him in their teams. And let's be honest those are the only other bikes worth his while.

That’s the point I’m making though, it would be a challenge, see if he could make it work. Plus he’s way better than he was back then, each year he has improved. Even this year everyone is much faster, race pace a few races ago (can’t remember where) was 8 seconds faster than the previous year, lap on lap the pace is unreal, these guys are mind boggingly fast!

That’s the point I’m making though, it would be a challenge, see if he could make it work. Plus he’s way better than he was back then, each year he has improved. You'll get a similar snapshot by looking at Scott Redding's shift from Ducati to BMW. He was a front runner and title contender on the Duke,now a top ten is an average,with the occasional podium.

Yes JR is a multiple world champ,but I don't think he'd be a contender on the BMW either. Maybe the Ducati or Yamaha.

Lots of riders have tripped over their cocks when changing manufacturer,Foggy on the Honda,most notably Rossi a miserable failure on the Ducati. It's a big risk for very little return.

JR is also a lot closer to the end of his career than he is to the beginning. When you're young you can take risks like that and come back from them if they don't pan out (if you're good enough).When you're older, it could be career-ending. Had Rossi not been Rossi, his ill-advised switch to Ducati could have finished him. As it was, he never won a championship again after the switch.

JR has taken the obvious (and smart) option by re-signing for Kawasaki.

Plus I think we sometimes view riders as different from us ie driven by the challenge of winning on a different bike. Whereas if it was me I'd have taken the Kawasaki offer all day every day. It's probably a stack of money, it's a bike/team he likes and he has a family to support. There's a chance JR could win 7 or 8 titles that'll keep him in the record books for a long time.

In the same way even before Marc got mashed he said he'd stay with Honda and I can see it. For him winning is everything and taking a risk on a different bike not working for him doesn't fit in that plan.

MM would have been as well dumping Honda a few seasons ago before the thing effectively ruined him. I bet he'd have been unstoppable on nearly anything else. Still,hindsight is a marvellous thing.
