Wet and dry weights are significantly closer on this don't forget. Its probably got a 1 or 2 litres of oil coolant. Compare that to an ICE bike which has a couple of litres of water coolant, 3 or 4 litres of oil and 15-20 litres of petrol.

Price wise I've already heard elsewhere this isbt going on sale. If it were I'd guess it'd sit above the top spec RS type stuff and be ~20k plus.

TE-1 is 220kg wet ( with coolant and full electrons 😉). The target was same as a fully fuelled Speed Triple. Also the CoG is the same as the IC bike so handling is extremely good. I'm lucky enough to have ridden both bikes.

Like other OEMs Triumph are of course working on other EV projects in the background.

It's a 'proof of pudding' bike, but my guess is that something not dissimilar will appear with a premium limited edition price tag. The big question will be whether they can get the ultra fast charge battery - 20 mins is claimed - into production at an even vaguely reasonable price.

Battery costs are dropping precipitously, I doubt Triumph are driving any particular cost reduction just cause they're so small, but they'll certainly benefit from the industry trend.

Really fast charging rates are also mostly limited by heat, so if you can design a good and effective cooling system you'll do well. I don't have any inside info on this, but I'd bet this is where WAE really come in.

There will come a point where raw materials become an issue. Whilst rare earth elements aren't particularly rare, they're not found in high concentrations - you don't get pure seams like gold. So it's vast quantities of rock that need to be crushed and processed. But I'm sure you know more about that than me.

The improved cooling issue was my thinking. I saw a video somewhere which claimed to show how a conventional battery could be charged in five minutes but essentially they'd built a disassembled battery and run coolant past every cell. It was humungous.

There's also security of supply given rising geopolitical tensions. China currently has a stranglehold on the processing of lithium for batteries and, like Russia, they wouldn't be shy about restricting supply (or making it very expensive) for non-favoured countries; i.e. anyone who criticises them or starts complaining about human rights violations.

AIUI China's hold is mostly down to the fact that no-one wants to get involved with the chemical nastiness of making batteries and magnets. I would say the same should apply to the chemical nastiness of making fossil fuels, but like Alcohol and Tobacco it's one of those things which would never get off the ground today but since it's been around for ages....

China is only fouth on the list BTW, Australia is actually the biggest supplier.

Yes, appreciate that China isn't the biggest supplier of raw materials but (according to a piece I read and can't find now), China has a near monopoly on processing and refining lithium, so there is a choke point there. It's probably due to (as you say) no-one wants to get involved with the chemical nastiness, but it's another thing that China has majority control over. With Russia and its gas and oil, and China with pretty much everything else, globalisation is showing its downside recently.

This fast charging option we hear about,can a battery only take so many of those in it's lifecycle before reducing battery life?

Nominally yes, in practical terms not so much. If you fast charge and only fast charge you're looking at single digit percentage difference to a battery which is charged conventionally. Bare in mind its very unlikely you'd fast charge every time, 90% of charges would probably be over night ones. Its the total number of miles/charges which seems to matter more than anything.

Yes and existing lithium technologies don't like being charged to 100%. It takes careful battery management and time.. hence why you normally read the 0-80% figures.
Don't believe solid state is as sensitive to high current charges or high DOD (though still lithium).
Give it a few years and I think sodium will replace lithium. Now, there's shit-loads of that about!

As I understand it the problem with gel batteries (like lithium) is the growth of structures within the gel. Literally physical 'damage' which grows like trees. Solid state batteries don't have that issue because there's no gel. They're errr.....solid.

I remember a tomorrows world looking at battery tech (it was a LONG time ago) and they were showing a prototype sodium acid battery that powered a small van, it was massive, as in not much load space left and ran at 400C!
