We have that head unit (or one from the same series) in the camper van. It looks like a later one that has bluetooth whereas with ours you need to connect the phone with a cable. When you connect to it you'll either get the apple car play or the google thing depending on your phone and then it'll use the navigation system on your phone through the headunit, maps and all. Ours is absolutely superb and we've used it all the way through Europe.weeksy wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 8:40 amYup, certainly seems to be. So i'm hopeful it has the bits i want. You can get both in some models of the CRV but not all.

The only minor curveball is i'm now looking and thinking "hmmm how about an Audi Q5..." bit more money, bit more miles, bit older..

Not trying to be an arse or anything but instead of jumping from one vehicle that's at an age/mileage where its likely to get a bit spendy on maintenance to another, why not try to get something newer/more suited with a bomb-proof warranty albeit at a higher cost? Even if you need to go down the PCP/lease route, surely you'd be better off?

It's really not an option due to size, availability, towbar, muddy fields and stuff. Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Not really anything in mind but personally if I were in your shoes I'd be looking for something like a new or new'ish Kia, Hyundai, etc. that still has a good lump of a manufacturers warranty rather than a 10 year old leggy SUV that is getting to the stage of things going wrong.weeksy wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 1:48 pmIt's really not an option due to size, availability, towbar, muddy fields and stuff. Not to say that new cars don't go wrong (wife's previous motor, a 2020 premium brand) started having random electrical gremlins that dealer struggled with but we were always given a decent loaner and dealer ended up buying car back from us. We purchased another new one from same dealer due to the service we received...
I just feel it's better to bite the bullet rather than try to make a cheaper car 'work' - clearly you put some miles on your car to and from MTB stuff...

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
The issue there comes down to simple economics mate. Doubling the budget gives me a gazillion options, but also doubles the budget/expenditure etc straight off the bat. Heck even the wifes 2018 Focus is worth £13,000 which is £5000 more than the CRV, adding £5000 in may sound easy, but it's not...v8-powered wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 1:56 pmNot really anything in mind but personally if I were in your shoes I'd be looking for something like a new or new'ish Kia, Hyundai, etc. that still has a good lump of a manufacturers warranty rather than a 10 year old leggy SUV that is getting to the stage of things going wrong.weeksy wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 1:48 pmIt's really not an option due to size, availability, towbar, muddy fields and stuff. Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
I like the Q Series cars - with the TFSi engine. But, from experience, check out the available space - they may not be as big as they look and check if the rear seat actually folds flat (the Q5 might). After a Volvo, the seat folding etc etc was a bit disappointing...but then, Volvo are pretty good at cargo space config.weeksy wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 1:38 pmTop stuff..... It's taking it from £1500 more than the CRV to over £2000 more than the CRV.

Has no-one suggested a new Duster?

Same here, the VAG cars I've owned have had minor electrical problems, one of my colleagues had a VW Passatt that used to randomly decide whether or not the drivers door would unlockdern wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 2:19 pmI'd take a honda over an audi every day of the week if I was risk averse.weeksy wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 1:38 pm The only minor curveball is i'm now looking and thinking "hmmm how about an Audi Q5..." bit more money, bit more miles, bit older..

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Just to add balance
I've had the same number of problems with my new/ish VAG cars* as with Honda. Discounting the tail pipe of the Honda half falling off and stuffing itself into the rear bumper that's (touch wood) none.
I think, with age and miles though, the CR-V is a better bet - and I wouldn't go anywhere near a VAG diesel (or BMW diesel).
* my aged Scirocco was a different story.

The last 6 cars/vans wifey and I have owed have been VAG, 2 petrol and 4 diesel. The sum total of faults is a broken spring on a Seat Ibiza.

That’s good. We’ve had so many little faults and warning lights in the t5 van I started to believe that it might be possessed.Pirahna wrote: Mon Jul 11, 2022 4:25 pm The last 6 cars/vans wifey and I have owed have been VAG, 2 petrol and 4 diesel. Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
Well i didn't buy it..
Why... not sure really, it just didn't do it for me.
Bodywork was nice, inside was a bit, well, meh.... tired in places. It hadn't had a full valet yet but still, wasn't quite as plush as i wanted.
It had a few little noises, rattles, but nothing terrible. The car itself drove nice, but i put the DB meter on at 50mph and it was pretty much the same as the QQ. Comfort was fine, although it was a bit more 'bucket' seat than the QQ, so you're a bit more in the seat, which can be good, but that does make it a bit hotter which didn't help today.
The stereo thing was a shit show and i couldn't connect the phone, didn't have navigation either, along with a camera rear view mirror which didn't show the road and was 100% distracting...
All in all... it was a bit better than the QQ... but not £10,000 better.
I'd argue, i preferred the 126,000 mile transit...

Re: Are vans better offroad than cars ?
So the difference in fuel between the CRV and an elgrand doing 12k miles a year is £1000 or £80 a month. An elgrand is £5-£6k cheaper. The elgrand will depreciate less too, in 6 years the elgrand total cost will have been less than the CRV.
