World's gone maaaaad!
Slow news day. You would assume the forces relied on the camaradery of light-hearted banter up to a point? I'm pretty sure most serviceman don't end up with cool nicknames like the do in the movies. "Maverick" and "Ice Man" for example. Much more likely to be christened "ShitStain" if you're really unlucky and someone once saw your filthy grundies. And as for being derogatory about the "other services", tough luck for not joining the cool one.

Maverick and Iceman? In my Dad's pics in Egypt they were Smudge, Bash and Gobshite Brearley.

They used to have great names like Lofty for anybody tall and Chalky for anybody called White. And Smudger for Smith.

Anyone called Clark was Nobby, I've no idea why.
And what's wrong with calling a Rupert a Rupert?

Re: Hereford Regiment asked to stop using nicknames
They aren't nicknames for people, they are for groups of people i.e. a Crab is anyone in the RAF. It's not even that offensive as the old RAF uniform was the same colour as the cream medics gave out to treat crabs (or so I heard).
When told to stop using a particular name they become wozzers - 'wozzer crab'.

Re: Hereford Regiment asked to stop using nicknames
I did a quick google and most of the genuine anecdotal services nicknames that came up were fairly affectionate or pretty boring really. My cousin was in the RM with a surname of MacNamara and was dully labelled 'Mac'. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I dunno if he had any choice in the matter, mind.
That said, there must be some fantastically unkind nicknames, and not just in the Services, so I dunno why they're so special. Do they not have HR keeping an eye on them?

Re: Hereford Regiment asked to stop using nicknames
The Bennies complained back in the 80s about being called Bennies (after the Crossroads soap character). It was stopped and the squaddies started calling them Stills. Still Bennies.
It's not just the Saturdays and Sundays that have nicknames - or terms of endearment, it's every fucker.

Re: Hereford Regiment asked to stop using nicknames
Madness.
Maybe it's a move towards us all just having numbers. "Number 4723649373 what are you doing with those hot knives"!
Maybe we could get the number stamped on us with a barcode?

The guy complaining was apparently Int Corps. They tend to stay away from the sharp end.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Tue Jul 05, 2022 11:01 am Im not entirely sure someone who can't take a ribbing is cut out for a job which may involve being in a shooting war

That may explain things. No one likes being known as Green Slime.

I honestly thought the Int Corps liked the term. Without it, nobody would have known they existed.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Tue Jul 05, 2022 2:46 pmThat may explain things. No one likes being known as Green Slime.

Had the same thing happen at a workplace. Apparently CumStain complained to HR & ShartPants wasn't happy either.
