Slow news day. You would assume the forces relied on the camaradery of light-hearted banter up to a point? I'm pretty sure most serviceman don't end up with cool nicknames like the do in the movies. "Maverick" and "Ice Man" for example. Much more likely to be christened "ShitStain" if you're really unlucky and someone once saw your filthy grundies. And as for being derogatory about the "other services", tough luck for not joining the cool one.

They aren't nicknames for people, they are for groups of people i.e. a Crab is anyone in the RAF. It's not even that offensive as the old RAF uniform was the same colour as the cream medics gave out to treat crabs (or so I heard).
When told to stop using a particular name they become wozzers - 'wozzer crab'.

I did a quick google and most of the genuine anecdotal services nicknames that came up were fairly affectionate or pretty boring really. My cousin was in the RM with a surname of MacNamara and was dully labelled 'Mac'. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I dunno if he had any choice in the matter, mind.
That said, there must be some fantastically unkind nicknames, and not just in the Services, so I dunno why they're so special. Do they not have HR keeping an eye on them?

The Bennies complained back in the 80s about being called Bennies (after the Crossroads soap character). It was stopped and the squaddies started calling them Stills. Still Bennies.

It's not just the Saturdays and Sundays that have nicknames - or terms of endearment, it's every fucker.

There are Stabs, Crap Hats, Blood Clots and dozens of others.

I honestly thought the Int Corps liked the term. Without it, nobody would have known they existed.
