Won't work. Fruit and veg growers are desperate for staff but they cannot get British workers. They are just not in least bit interested in doing such physical work.

So with the lack of European workers some are resorting to bringing in workers from Nepal and Tajikistan
Every spring thousands of seasonal workers come to harvest the UK's soft fruits, but this year they're coming from much further afield.

Before Brexit many came from Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.

Now as well as Nepalese, UK growers are employing Indonesian, Mongol, Tajik, Kazakhs and Kyrgyz workers.
Good luck with trying to get Brits to fill these positions.

By these results that are an absolute pasting in anyones book its looking like the current crop of Conservatives aren't pleasing anyone.
The economy is falling behind and the only one worse is Russia.
Once the cracks start to show, people start to pay attention.
They will pay attention for 5 minutes, then the tories will use their usual distraction weapon - celebrities!

They will be everywhere - doing what they are told - the plastic people that they are, bouncing around in their corrupt world made of air and plastic!

And before yo know it, the tories win.

This is a world ruled by fakeness, us real people have no chance, because for us to win, we need to be seen and heard in real life!

If you paid £50K to pick fruit there'd be no shortage of workers, the problem isn't lack of people it's low wages, immigration benefits the rich, not the poor who are British voters

A certain level of unemployment is a good thing for the economy, gives liquidity to the employment market. Seasonal workers is a good example, too many people in permanent jobs means nobody available for piece work.
Changes in the last couple of decades have made that kind of work less attractive as well. It's now a risk without the reward. We didn't need Brexit to get rid of many Eastern European workers, IR35 did that.

You're gonna have to compel those unemployed British citizens to work; unemployment rates are the lowest since 2013.

+ the economy only works with imported labour and some slack in the system. Unemployment will never be zero. Also, something like 21% of jobs are done by immigrant labour in one way or another (according to The Spectator). The whole of the dole queue wouldn't even make a dent in that.

I don't think the service provided by the NHS would be improved if all the vacant jobs were just backfilled with the resident unemployed either.

Could make for interesting interviews down the Job Centre:

"Well, we have an opportunity here, fruit picking?"

Oh no, can't work outside.

"That's fine. Couple of 'indoor' jobs: intensive care nurse, or GP, or we have some interesting openings for cardiac and neurology surgeons. Did you get GCSE woodwork?"

So, how much exactly are you prepared to pay for a punnet of strawberries?

I might just find I'm not prepared to pay the unsubsidised price for them, they would once again become a special treat. Farmers would grow something else and the few strawberry farmers left would make sure what they do grow is good quality and not the tasteless stuff supermarkets have carried for the last few years.

If fruit pickers got paid £50k, the farmers might find another way of doing it.
