Bird magnet!

Post by wull »

Sadly not the “birds” I’d be hoping for.

The wee bastard decided Mondays weren’t for him/her/transgender/neutral or whatever other options there is and blootered itself off my head, well helmet! Square in the noggin! Then fell dead on the tank, I had th throw the fucker away! I think it just clips the top of the screen before hitting me but fook me it was sore.

Quickly checked the bike when I arrived at work and the screens seems fine, visor was a bit smeared in bird and a random feather.

Had that with a Wood Pigeon years ago, bloody hurt and snapped the side pod off my Arai as the visor flexed enough to smash me in the nose.

The bird no idea what happened to it, I think it just exploded.

Had that a few years ago, except there were a dozen riders behind me wondering why I began weaving* across the road before my helmet exploded in a sea of feathers.

Looked like you clobbered a Woody. That will have got your attention at 70+ for sure. Nesting time is the worst, with the adult birds flying back and forth to the nest, then the fledglings learning the ropes. I hate hitting birds, cos I kinda like them, but I've had a faceful of blackbird,a few finches and a bloody pheasant off my front wheel. Man those things are dopey, the run about all over the road and forget they have wings.

Had a black back seagull in the headlight of a GS1000, smashed the light to bits and bent the clock bracket.

If birds are the closest living relatives to the dinosaurs, pheasants give you a clue as to why they became extinct!

When they do take to the air, they have all the agility of a fully laden 380 Airbus!

I once saw a pigeon fly into a spoked wheel - it went up like a burst pillow during a pillow fight. I could smell the feathers burning on the radiator and exhaust. The bike was ok - I really doubt the pigeon made it.

TBF, if I were a bird I doubt I could be arsed with flying unless it is really necessary. Walking has to be easier right?

In which case you'd probably have an early and terminal meeting with a cat.

I'd have to agree with you as sometimes standing still completely could have saved them. That's really easy.

Back in the early ‘90s a few of us were out around the Brecon Beacons when one of them hit a bird, the usual puff of feathers but little other evidence of Orville’s fate on his bike.

A few miles later there was an ungodly stink coming from his motorcycle, and we thought that it must have splattered over the exhaust headers.

The smell didn’t get any better during the ride home and back at his place we decided to take a closer look and clean off the debris that was by now creating a wretch inducing whiff.

That’s when we discovered what were the remains of a Blackbird that had gone directly down the inlet of the RamAir / air box feed on his GSXR 1100.
The tubes start circular at the front then sort of go flat as they pass over the top of that tall engine, and this is where the poor critter got trapped then subsequently cooked over the next couple of hours.

Ever watched a buzzard soaring? Effortless.

The kites around here either fall out of a tree or face the wind and open their wings..they do look the part.

Any one else noticed that when I post, a thread tends to stop?

Proving it's not true.... :D

Pootling progressively through France, bird* explodes out of the undergrowth directly across the road in front of me putting it at head height and on collision course. I 'calmly compensate'. Bird senses impending calamity...and tries to turn around, mid flight, and head back from whence it came. :( I, erm, 'calmly recompensate' as this bird misses my head by a feather tip. I continue, mentally reviewing underwear supplies.

* species unknown, appeared to be chicken sized as it passed my right ear.

At the TT the other week Paul Jordan hit a bird whilst riding flat out on Sulby straight, broke his visor & gave him two black eyes,Lee Johnston was joking with him about it on his TT Vlog.
Dean Harrison hit one & broke the screen on lap one of a 6 lap race & then hit another later in the race
