The old chestnut : Mixing tyres

Over the years I've mixed tyres a lot, normally second hand ones too. But never Dunlops. No Sirree, never Dunlops. Or Avons...

I've never used Avons since I had not one but two tyres delaminate on me in the mid-90s. Had Avon been in the slightest bit apologetic or even helpful I would probably have used them again. Instead they tried to make out that it was all my fault and resisted any offer of replacement tyres until I'd threatened them with solicitors. letters to MCN etc.

I also used to avoid Dunlops until the Roadsmart/Sportsmart landed and when I tried them was very impressed in spite of my misgivings. I honestly don't think any of the majors make bad, or even indifferent, tyres any more.

Except Avon, of course...

Always find Dunlops to be really iffy in the wet. Not used them for years because of it though, so they may have improved? Same with Avons. I could spin up the rear wheel when accelerating in the wet on my Triumph! I had Azzaros on another bike and they were the same. At least you'd get a warning with Avons, unlike Dunlops...

People ride around on bikes with car tyres fitted (which is illegal in the UK I think?) don't they? If you can do that without dying a fiery death I have to assume that mixing tyres of the same type/size but different brands is nominally OK.

I've ridden tens of thousands of miles on mixed tyres. When I worked I was riding 25-30k a year, mostly of Fireblades, I would have been mental to change the front every time the rear was worn out.

Yeah but you just replace like for like with the rear, not sure what that’s got to do with replacing the front or not.

I probably have, can't recall TBH. Commuting lots of miles knocks any objections out of doing otherwise!

I knew someone who used a car tyre on the back of an SR250, sadly the fat twat survived to buy the most hideous trike you've ever seen, it looked like what it was, a scrap Reliant with the front end of a shit bike welded on.

On my Supermotos I used to run a wet front and a sports rear from various brands.

Since then I've tended to fit matching pairs but only cos that's how it's worked out

Having had a look at the front it is slightly squared off but a long way from the wear markers. Try to see what availability is like and then change mid August.

I mix tyres all the time and have done so for years. Yes, sometimes the profiles are different but i soon adapt to the feel. The only bike i have left on a proper set is the Multi as i normally use 2 rears to a front most of the time but even then i have run mixed tyres when necessary. Left on a tour with Bridgestone T30 front and back and the rear wore out within 3000 miles which is shocking for a supposed Touring tyre. Replaced the rear with a Conti Road Attack as it was the only tyre i could find among the Norwegian mountains that would fit which lasted almost 6000 miles which was far better than the alleged more expensive touring tyre

The Fazer currently has a Dunlop Roadsmart on the front and a Pirelli Diablo Strada (i think) on the back thats worn almost to the edge of the tread which replaced a Contimotion budget tyre. I have in the past run a Dunlop D207 on the front of the 636 with a part worn race SC1 Pirelli Supercorsa on the back more than once.

I think its fair to say i am not that precious over tyres

Yup, on a fairly new set of matched top branded recommended fit tyres ...... was pissed off i couldnt remove them from the wreck as they were worth a few hundred quid

I did indeed much to the discust of the doomsayers. I didn't die, crash of otherwise. Done about 4k miles on it. No longer commuting so bike tyre back on but I upset more people by putting on a 150x70 instead of a 160x60 apparently stoning to death is imminent and I will crash and die. Again

I ran a 150/70 on a 4.5" rear rim on my VFR for many years and it was excellent. I'm now running a 160/70 on a 5" rear rim which is similarly fine and dandy.

No but I was clever and had a spare back wheel with a motorcycle tyre on it just swapped them out.
