Another pillar drill

Post by cheb »

This one's a geared head Meddings that's been outside for a few years. There's no before photos as I was a bit busy and none of the strip down as it was way to grubby to let a camera near.

It's now reduced to big bits:

The column is 3" solid steel, the only bit that needs separating is the collar, the foot comes off easily. I need to make a puller to do it, or find a very tall hydraulic press. Or do something stupid with a fork lift.

Motor and gearbox. I suspect the gears might be damaged, I'll find out when it comes apart.

The other bits, table head and small parts. The table gearbox works, which is a bonus.

The only cheat I did was to cut the table locking bolt. It was a bodge, and a broken one at that, so no loss.

Thinks: The local garage has an inspection pit. That, their hydraulic press, and a couple of scaffold planks might suffice.

The rebuild will done in the usual fits and starts.

The column and collar are separated:

First, modify the press:

Then get eaten alive by midges and not think about photos until:

Degreasing, derusting and painting next.
