'Normal' people? I'm not spending less, the booze I buy is not affected by minimum pricing.Mussels wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 2:32 pm Minimum alcohol unit pricing doesn't work.
So normal people are spending less while alcoholics suck it up and spend more to maintain their habit. Everyone loses apart from pricey booze manufacturers.

Normal as in non-alcoholics, not filthy rich people who can afford £10 bottles of wine.slowsider wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 4:25 pm'Normal' people? I only buy when it's on special offer, even then buy six to get extra discount.
And even then, it's typically well under £10 full price

They are lumping in people who can't pay for some reason and leave their details so there may not be an increase in theft at all. Probably is but why don't they distinguish between the groups.JackyJoll wrote: ↑Sat Jun 11, 2022 6:59 pm They’re stealing petrol.

Filling your tank without the means to pay is theft. The drive-offs will still had their reg recorded.Mussels wrote: ↑Sat Jun 11, 2022 9:14 pmThey are lumping in people who can't pay for some reason and leave their details so there may not be an increase in theft at all. I believe theft needs to have intent, if they weren't intending to take it without paying then it isn't theft.slowsider wrote: ↑Sat Jun 11, 2022 10:52 pmFilling your tank without the means to pay is theft. Re: In todays news...
Years and years ago my Uncle had a lodger who "borrowed" my Uncle's bike without permission, then wrote it off.
In the end he didn't get charged with any crime because 'they' concluded that the lodger had always intended to bring the bike back even though he didn't have permission to take it, therefore it wasn't theft.

Arron Banks loses Russia libel case against Carole Cadwalladr
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61782578
Libel in the UK confuses me, the judge said that the statement was untrue and damaging but OK as it's in the public interest.
Why does public interest remove the need for a statement to be true?
I have little interest in the people involved, just the reasoning.
