Anyone have experience of the Whyte t-130?

My only tip would be a) find a bike that "fits" b) avoid a press fit bottom bracket. They were designed by the Devil. c) ride with mates

That's why I'm looking at Whyte, my 603 fits me really well and just feels nice to ride - so I'm hoping that's carried through from hardtail to full-sus.

Thing is, you won't really know what you prefer, like, want until a year or two

For example I prefer Fox forks, SRAM shifters and SRAM brakes. Why, I just do. But plenty of people prefer the reverse.

Indeed - it just preferences.
I am sure that Fox Forks are brilliant - the first pair of Talas I had were very, very good. But you had to send them to Fox to be serviced - hence it was a house point deducted from me.

I wonder how long it will be before the SRAM/ Shimano duopoly will be broken. I know SunRace etc are trying - but I never heard that much about other party derailleurs.

And the sad thing @Numnut , is what you want now will have changed next year
MTB riders, like motorbike riders, are seldom satisfied.

My last tip would be don't over bike yourself to start with. Look at something in the 130 - 140 front, 120-140 back travel - commonly now called "short travel" or "downcountry" bikes

So far I've worked out I prefer not riding on the road and that my rockshox judy forks on the 603 are so so much better than the rattly horrible suntour ones that came with it. I've definitely got an itch that needs scratching with mtb though. I'm just waiting for the place selling the t130 to answer a few questions and if it's all good I'll spend the summer/autumn on that and see if I miss motorbikes.

You wouldn't be the first or the last. Several of us hardly ever put a key in a motorbike since starting pedals

I wouldn't dwell on it mate, there's no reason to not post here if you like the vibe still, plenty don't even own bikes, some never have lol. But even those 'like' bikes and have been mates for 20+ years, so join in... If you're happy, you're welcome

That's ace. It looks superb and has all the right bits on it.

Set your forks to 1psi per kg in weight and shock to 1psi per lb.
It's a decent start point.

Pressures to 24-27 using an accurate gauge, SKS is decent.

Then ride and enjoy!!!!

Thanks for the base settings for the suspension, having rear suspension on a pedal bike will be a whole new world!

I’ve got a joe blow track pump and the gauge is pretty good, but we’ll see… I’m presuming it’s tubeless already but I didn’t ask. If not I’ll do these ones properly - I use tubes with sealant on the 603, because they’re £3 a pop and seem to work well (and the tyres have too many holes now to go tubeless now!), but they’re heavy as hell.

Time to go shopping for a few bits I think…

It’s absolutely immaculate, we’ll not absolutely but pretty close! I’ve just about got everything in the right place ready for a ride to work tomorrow, a quick shakedown before going to the twisted oaks place on Friday.

Brakes could do with a bleed, but they’re not bad at all. Otherwise it’s lovely, I fitted some nicer mudguards to this one, the rrp pro guards.

I’ve got some pictures but they’re huge and I can’t work out how to resize them on my phone so I’ll put some up in the morning.

Cheers for the advice, this is going to be fun I think!

That does look like some good places to have fun!

Rode in to work this morning, loving the rear suspension already, and pretty much everything else. It fits really well, and I've just about managed to get everything in the right place. The only criticism is that the brakes feel like that could have done with a bleed, they're plenty powerful but there's a fair bit of lever travel.

It's lovely though, for 2nd hand, i've struggled to find any marks. Here's some more photos, obviously it's covered in mud now and will never be this clean again!

Brakes are tough, you can overfill them to get firm levers, basically remove the wheel, pull the lever once (maybe 1.5) and then bleed, as you then push the pistons back to get the wheel in, they're a very firm lever.... However, they're also VERY close and rubby. So it's a compromise. Some brakes do this better/worse than others.
I find Shimano easier to get a firm lever without rubbing than a SRAM... but i like my levers softer, so it's not a massive issue for me.

Yeah, there's no rubbing at the moment, which is fairly novel for me too. They work fine, so I'll get some more riding time and fiddle around with lever position and see what needs doing. This bike is about 20 steps up from what I'm used to so I need to work out what normal is before I start screwing around with it!
