Vote of No confidence?
If Boris Johnson is voted out, who is there to replace him?
Is it a case of the 'best of a bad group'?
Or is there someone who is actually better?
(Aside from the comment I've read elsewhere that 'anyone' is better - can't quite accept that as I'm pretty sure there are some other shockers in the party!!)

Re: Vote of No confidence?
Personally I think he's ridden his affable, man-of-the-people nonsensical personality (and all that comes with it) to the point of and beyond what even some of his loyal supporters can stomach. His personality, which got him in in the first place, is ultimately his downfall.
No I don't think he'll go today either, but I do think there may be sufficient backlash to weaken him.
As for replacements. Meh.

Re: Vote of No confidence?
I can't see them actually voting him out right now, but then they didn't vote out Theresa May but she went soon after!!
That's kind of how I feel looking at them, but I don't read up on politics much, so figured I just don't know enough!!

Well, how would you? Even the front benchers stay under the radar to some extent. If someone towards the backbenches is pushed forward they effectively have a clean slate - a clean slate is better than a dirty plate, often that's more useful than any great test of competency.
Anyway - on paper Boris shouldn't have been touched with a bargepole, with his history of fibbing, incompetency and pissing about.

I never did understand how he came to be voted in!DefTrap wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 12:44 pmWell, how would you? Even the front benchers stay under the radar to some extent. But for the how could I know much - TBF, I've always thought other people have a lot more knowledge about politics and politicians than me. I'm quite naive about it all and deliberately don't read a lot about it since I moved here as I have no plans to move back there so have less and less interest. Before I lived here I generally talked to my brother and dad and a couple of friends who 'know' about politics and then read a bit before I voted. But on a day to day basis I hold my hands up and say I couldn't deal with reading about it all the time!
I do need to start reading up on the French system and politicians as at some point I hope to have nationality and so will be able to vote here!!

Re: Vote of No confidence?
I doubt the vote of confidence will oust him - but is does rather suggest, even to him, his time is limited.
The sad fact is I cannot see any “talent” that is going to replace him:
Javid
Truss
Hunt
Zahwari (?)
Raab
Patel
Says a lot really
And then there is Dorries ….

Re: Vote of No confidence?
Interesting insight from a Tory 'staffer'. He'll probably survive the vote thanks to the new northern MPs, who don't care whether the party wins the next election as long as they keep their seats. They haven't been in power long enough to sort out a cushy job to parachute into if they get ditched and the dole beckons for some. They assume that Northern voters still think he's 'just a bit of a character'.
If he does survive it'll be like one of those bulls in a bullfight, staggering around, head down after the picadors have stabbed them in the neck with their lances a few times. Bloodied, still standing but ultimately doomed.
The pity of the replacement is that there are probably a few that could do a better job of running the country by assembling and working with a decent cabinet....but they'll never get the party votes. Running the country properly isn't on their list of appropriate talents for candidates.

Should be a front runner. One of the few with the wits to do the job, but perhaps now tainted by his wife's non-dom status.

I honestly think we will never have a decent, law abiding leader with morals and the passion to lead a nation ever again.
I honestly think that what ever you put on your next election card will make no difference what so ever.

Gove, voice(s) of the people?

Gove really scares me - there is something very machivellian about every thing he does . He even makes Peter Mandelson look trustworthy

What do you mean "again", that indicates there's been one in the past, who was it?Greenman wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 3:31 pmThis.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 1:37 pm The pity of the replacement is that there are probably a few that could do a better job of running the country by assembling and working with a decent cabinet....but they'll never get the party votes. Re: Vote of No confidence?
I would not be surprised to see the vote being fairly close and Johnson resign.
But in any case if Johnson does survive I believe the upcoming 2 by-elections in June (23rd?) in Wakefield and Devon will prove to be his nemesis.

Re: Vote of No confidence?
211 have confidence vs 148 no confidence.
Over 40% do not have confidence in Johnson.
Dead man walking.
