Friday throwback. What were your old bikes?

Post by weeksy »

Bit of Friday fun.

What did you own previously. Can be recent, old, whenever.

This was taken for a riding challenge over on TRC.

Above was from Cadwell with the lads.

My second bike, after a CB125S...

...and I'm embarrassed to say, dressed up in a bright red Dunstall fibreglass tank-seat, fitted with clip-ons and rear-sets, wrapped in a full endurance style fairing and deafening the world via a pair of Dunstall Decibel 'silencers' which did nothing of the sort - I was astonished to find you can still buy them!

I had a front disc swap from a G5 planned for the front end but ran out of cash.

I've had a few in my 50 years of biking. I'll do some of the highlights.

Lots of stroker 250/350 Suzuki and Yamahas in the early 70s.

First big bike was a Kawasaki 900Z1A. I was 19. :silent:

Image

Traded it for a Suzuki GS1000E.

Image

I had an Elsie for a while, when I had just bought a house and was skint, then I went all BMW with an R90S.

Image

I jumped a few years onto a GPZ900R A2. It felt unbelievably fast and handled so well after the Beemer.

Image

Then came a couple of ZZR1100s. I probably had the most fun ever on those high speed sofas. Can't find a handy pic.

Staying with Kawasaki,I picked up a 98 ZX9R C1. A bloody well underrated bike and awesome with the suspenders sorted.

Image

Suzuki GSXR1000 K3,another great bike. Only sportsbike I've ever had with a comfy seat! Loved the colour too.

ImageZX10R C1 next. One of the best bikes ever imo.

Image

I kept the 10R for 14 years, then in 2020 the current 'old man' naked bike came along. First new bike since 1976.

Favourite was the 2007 speedmaster, bought new and kept until my hip went, probably because of the seating position :P

Just sold the tigger 800 today and not sure if i will be getting another, unless it is twist and go, because of arthritis in both hands fekking up throttle abd clutch use.

First bike was a 1964 Honda C200 - a 90cc single cylinder OHV engine with pressed steel frame. NOT a step-thru, but a small motor bike. James May has one, apparently.

Second bike was a 1967 Honda CD175 - twin cylinder OHC 175cc engine, again with pressed steel frame. Mine was the earlier 'sloper' engine and the more pointy tank and better styling. The later CD175 was a retrograde step in every way.

Third bike was another Honda, this time a 1966 305cc CB77, with 180 degree crank and twin contact breaker points. Saw my first (indicated) 100mph on this bike. Probably about 90mph in real money

Fourth bike was my first ever new bike, the 1980 Yamaha RD350LC that I still own. I ran that for nearly ten years until it was retired in favour of:

Fifth bike - a new 1989 Honda VFR750F-K (RC24) that I put 80k miles on in 6 years commuting to and from a contract 45 miles away. Never missed a beat.

Sixth bike - a new 1990 Ducati 851 Biposto, the early one with (crap) Marzocchi suspension. This bike kick-started a love of V-twins that hasn't quit yet.

Seventh bike - a s/h 1985 Yamaha RD350F YPVS, technically bought for my then GF, but I put more miles on it. Cracking little bike and one I should never have sold.

Eighth bike was a damaged repairable RD350 that was the donor bike for the Hejira 350 I poured thousands of pounds into as a short GF-friendly road bike. Except we split up before it was finished and it morphed into a trackday bike for me.
Hejira_01.jpg

Ninth bike was a s/h 1991 Ducati 888 SP3 (number 269) that I pxed the 851 in for and was the bike I'd wanted all along. It had only 1400kms on the clock and chicken strips a mile wide when I got it. The previous owner was clearly shit-scared of it... Still got it but never use it.

Tenth bike was a new 1996 Honda VFR750F-T (RC36) to replace the old RC24 and take over commuter duties. I never really gelled with it in the same way as the older bike though.

Eleventh bike was a new 1997 Suzuki TL1000S in dark green. Fabulous motor but iffy suspension. Handling was transformed by junking the 6 in rear rim and 190/50 tyre and replacing it with a GSXR600 5.5 inch rim and 180/55 tyre. And junking the door closer suspension and raplacing with Ohlins. I only sold it cos I was skint after being out of work for 15 months.

Twelfth bike was a s/h 1988 VFR750F-J to replace the F-T that I was underwhelmed by. Still got it, but in greatly modified form.

Thirteenth bike was a new 2008 Aprilia Falco SL1000 that had been 'lost' in Aprilia UK's warehouse for 3 or 4 years. I snapped it up for £4500 and it remains the single biggest bargain of my biking life. Can't imagine ever selling it.

Fourteenth bike was a s/h Falco that I intended to use as a France-only vehicle, but that plan was shelved when I ran through what I thought was just water on the road, but turned out to be acid...! The bike was a real mess and had to be repatriated to the UK to be cleaned up and fixed. After that I lost heart and moved it on.

Fifteenth and last (to date) was a new 2017 KTM Duke 690 R. Another keeper and never fails to put a big grin on my face.

I read it and thought "how does a man who's had so many epic machines end up with a pos BMW thing and a fucking monkey bike"
