We went to Butlitz at Skeggy when I was a kid. I know my mum worked bloody hard to afford to take us, so we smiled and had a great time.

Never been to a Butlins but for its time i cant see why not. We got taken to a caravan park up Arbroath what lack facility's but the town in the 70's had everything. I went through the same town about 10 years back and the caravan park is still there and same name (Red Lion) but the town is now a right dump.

When the kids were young we did one of those CentreParks things. For all my dread,we all had a fine old time. Mrs.Skub still reminds me how I took her bicycle and bashed it all shapes.

My missus and a friend booked for both families to go to Potters* up near Great Yarmouth. Me and my mate were not happy but decided to go along under protest. It was actually alright. Everything Butlins should be but isn't. Activities, accommodation and dining were all good and they served all different sorts of Adnams as it's their local brewery, so we were happy bunnies.


*Where they host the indoor bowls championships. I once chanced across this most genteel sport on BBC2 on afternoon and ended up watching the whole shebang. Quite mesmerising.

T'was one of only two school trips Mrs D (Louth native) ever got to go on.

Apparently she loved the latter cause it has a fake boat which rocked about like it was in a storm. Simpler times.

They built a massive reservoir up in the Dales to provide pure, soft water to wash the wool.

Manningham was the place to live. Huge houses.
But now it's Bedsit central. All the big houses are now split into 15/20/25 individual bedsits. So can imagine how big they were.

Eye test today. Very small change and only in my left eye. However pressures are back up, so have to go back to eye specialist to check for glaucoma etc... New glasses with reactions lenses as I have a lot of driving this year in the summer and may as well protect my vision. Then home for coffee/lunch and then to head out to the Erith Church to help with a Bible Study. May be able to get a pastoral visit done on the way there, so saving a trip. Petrol is £1.769 in local station now. I think Asda is still closer to £1.649, so may head there instead!

I understand it was no accident that the wool trade was there, as the damp conditions, a result of rain forming over the Pennines and falling on the region, kept the thread moist and stopped it snapping.

There used to be a bank called The British Linen Bank, one of the few UK banks headquartered outside of London (Manchester IIRC) that was set up specifically to finance the wool trade. Long gone now.

Bear in mind reactions lenses are triggered by UV light, which is generally blocked by car windscreens. They may be less effective when driving. If you can get a two for one deal it may be best to go for separate sunglasses.

Bike service today, so took out a loan CBR600 for a play. 10 years old but in really good nick and a peach of an engine. I enjoyed the day, and the threatened rain stayed away so that was a bonus. Very different from my CB500 but weirdly I enjoyed the CBR at trickling speeds, 10 -30 mph, more than on main roads.

Some of those big houses are quite gothic and you could film the Munsters in them. I was told they'd been built by Germans as quite a few were involved in the wool trade.

Useless fact no. 34,759: They processed so much raw wool in the area that Esholt sewage works (biggest works in the country IIRC - had its own steam engine - Nellie and they ran special stages of the RAC rally in the grounds) used filter presses to extract the lanolin as a very thick grease. The grease was sold to British Rail to lube rolling stock axles. The dry matter from the presses was sold as rose fertiliser until that was banned.

The main entry point had a metal bars across it. One bloke was employed to keep it clear of condoms and was always busiest on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

If I remember right, the filter beds had charcoal in which they sold and replaced with limestone quarried on site.

The stately home in the middle was the HQ of Yorkshire Water and had a perfectly mown lawn in front of it.

We used to go to Esholt sprint every year. I remember there was a 10MPH speed limit on the approach road and hitting 100 there was fun

I used to live near Woolwich and the head office was quite an imposing old Victorian building, slap in the middle of Woolwich. I believe the banking hall is now a pub.
