How would you like to pay, sir?
Re: How would you like to pay, sir?
Always been cash or bank loan for me, HP & PCP always feels like you never really own the bike & bank loans are usually cheapest route for me.
Edit:- putting deposit down on credit card to get the protection from a dealer too.

I'd certianly not go PCP again. The final payment just lingers, although the low monthly payment is the main seller. It made sense as I knew I'd move onto something else within a couple of years.

Very true. My post wasn't meant to appear superior in any way, just to highlight my mindset and to underscore there are plenty of better options out there today, which is a positive thing.

Mine neither. It's just the way things were. My dad said 'if you can't afford, you can't have' and it stuck (which was why I was riding around on stuff that needed constantly spannering for years ). Now, I've mellowed. I'll take the deals but only if I've got the means to pay things off sat in the kitty. Daft really.

Most bikes and cars have been on a loan, but looking at where the economy is heading(+threat of strike action by rail unions) I don't really want anymore mortgage or loan debt so currently saving like mad for a new car and after that I'll be trying to pay off as much mortgage as possible each month.

Shit the bed... paying for a 8500 bike over 5 years on their credit results in paying 2500 over the sticker price.tricol wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 3:39 pm Urgh, my head is being turned....

Re: How would you like to pay, sir?
I have a settlement fee of around £5500 for my Trident. I can certainly make a profit selling this. They seem to be going for around £6500-£7000. KJM basically offered me the settlement figure which was what I was expecting. Good time to try and sell the Trident as they're still hard to get hold of.

Yea, I certainly wouldn't be using them for financing.dern wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 4:31 pmShit the bed... paying for a 8500 bike over 5 years on their credit results in paying 2500 over the sticker price.tricol wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 3:39 pm Urgh, my head is being turned....

Basically without going into too much detail, I ended up taking out loads of stupid HP's for stuff and it very quickly gathered up. Thankfully I got it all paid off in the end but it took the guts of 8 years. Now, the Trident is the only thing I have on finance (outside of rent).Potter wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 4:58 pm I think the way people look at their salaries is different now, they see £200 spare a month and they think "I could borrow £10k with that and pay it off over X years", whereas for me it's just £200.
Houses, cars, bikes, TVs, etc, everything is on credit and you drip feed your wages out each month to pay for it.
I did this years ago and every month all my money went on paying my debts - I said never again - and now if I can't afford to buy it I don't.
I still wanted nice things though, so I got a better paying job instead of looking for better debt payment terms.

Re: How would you like to pay, sir?
When I graduated in the early 90s I needed a suit so bought one on a store credit card from top man or top shop. I don't think I ever consciously increased the payments from the minimum and god knows how much that shitty suit cost me. I never used to open bank statements and used to spend until the machine stopped giving me money and then cashed cheques at the pub... not a clever way to live and the bank were less than impressed

Re: How would you like to pay, sir?
I wouldn't use credit to buy a toy, did this in the past and I never had any funds to enjoy myself, since I stopped borrowing money for things I don't need my life has been loads better.
For me, riding a bike is about having fun, so long as a bike is easy to ride and reliable it will be fun.
I think Tricol should keep the bike he has and spend any spare cash on riding it, do you want to be the bloke who bought a £10,000 bike but couldn't afford to go anywhere, or the bloke who went to the Bol'd'Or on an £8000 bike?

Re: How would you like to pay, sir?
There is the argument that buying a depreciating asset for cash is just plain daft, I always used to buy cash but now I wouldn't. I'd rather drop the cash into my pension and get 25% relief on it. Also a new £10k bike for £100 ish a month plus a deposit isn't even 2 good meals out. Buying cash is an old way of thinking tbh.
