Kaoko throttle 'satbilisers'

Post by dern »

Anyone use one of these and can vouch that the quality is worth the price?

Took me 6 hours to get to where I was going on Friday and could definitely have used something like this to allow me to rest my right wrist and elbow (an age thing I guess) without losing speed as I was on the M6.

I've got one and it's very good, very useful & great quality.

As to whether it's worth the price I'm really not sure. I got mine for a steal, second hand off ebay & I doubt I'd have paid £100 for one. Before the Kaoko I had one of those plastic clip on things that jams against the brake lever which also worked fine and was a tenner.

I can't see it working with bar end mirrors.

Atlas make one which works a bit differently, it's crazy money... however you can get a Chinese copy off Aliexpress for £30.

I don't need one, I've got cruise control :)

I've got a Wunderlich one on my GSA. It's similar but not exactly the same as the Kaoko one, the main difference being the ridges on the Wunderlich one are shallower and harder to operate, particularly with thick gloves. The Kaoko one looks to be easier to use in this regard.

Using the Wunderlich one on the move, it was okay but you still need to frequently moderate your speed - the bike was always accelerating or decelerating albeit very slowly, you're just nudging the throttle open or closed to maintain the gap so still need grip the throttle, just not as tightly or constantly.

I've also used a Scottoiler throttle lock which was easier to use, way cheaper and actually helped with wrist and hand cramp.

I don't know what a satbiliser is by the way :? :wtf:

The atlas ones are 200 quid!

I'm less enthusiastic about having anything cheap, plastic or knockoff potentially jamming the throttle but the kaoko looks pretty well made and uses side friction from a thrust washer to hold the throttle tube in place and you can override it rather than having to disengage it. Probably worth 100 quid to me though as the day after my 6 hour motorway trip my had felt like I'd slept on it.

Can't speak for the Kaoko but the Wunderlich was really good quality. They are very easy to override an knock the throttle off.

I've used one similar to that too. It was a fiver off the bay. They do work, but even when pushing it out of the way when not needed, you still need to be careful it doesn't accidentally give you more revs than you want...suddenly.

Have I missed summat?

I've been riding 50 years and don't have much trouble holding the throttle. Am I special?

Aren't you supposed to wind it forward so in effect closing the throttle?

Yeah, but somehow it's positioning managed to interfere with what I wanted on occasion in around city traffic. Maybe didn't live with it long enough, but it put the shits up me a couple of times!

I'm not sure I've seen enough evidence to make a medical judgement ;)

It's fine when I'm riding but my hand was numb the next day. Never happened on track or on that journey before. I have got arthritis in that too since going last time by bike. Anyway, shit happens :D

I injured my right forearm lifting stuff months ago and sometimes it gives me grief when holding a steady throttle. It's lingering on and bloody annoying.

Under a tenner and don't interfere with the throttle return - they just lessen the effort of holding the throttle open by using the weight of your arm. I find it works positioned to the right, so it's under the palm rather than the left where it's under the thumb.

So often motorcycle accessories are overpriced... this one isn't.
