Yamaha Fazer 600 suddenly no power

Post by Bigyin »

Was out on the auld Fazer yesterday with couple of students and nearing end of ride stopped to get them to practise emergency stops and u turns. Got back on my bike and started engine as normal but selected first gear with sidestand still down and the cut out kicked in. Oops but no biggie I thought till I looked down and dash was clear, no neutral light or digital readout on the odometer and bike completely dead.

I thought it was a fuse but have gone through every fuse and all are fine but bike is still dead. Tried switching on with sidestand both up and down but still dead. Battery is fine with plenty juice so has to be something in the wiring.

Could it be a blown ignition relay or has anyone had similar?

Bike is currently at work base so going back this afternoon to try and check through more and might swap some parts off one of the other instructors Fazers to see if I can figure it out

That was my first thought, happened on my Firestorm. Exactly same symptom.

Does sound like the main fuse popped, I'm not familiar with Fazers so I don't know where it is, but sometimes it's not with the rest of the fuses but in a separate fuse holder near the battery.

If it has blown a fuse you have to investigate why, it sounds like the side stand switch could be the cause.

If it definitely isn't a fuse I'd look at the ignition switch to see if it's working and also check the main earth.

Yup, main fuse is the 30A next to battery as that was my first thought and it's fine. I have a wiring diagram which shows 6 fuses in total and I have checked them all.

Ì'll check the other suggestions

Is there a trip switch, some bikes have them so that in accident it cuts all the electrics, the jolt from putting the bike in gear with the stand down might have triggered it.

When you say "it's fine" how have you decided that ? I've had fuses that look good, but were dead.

I know you know stuff.... but just checking.

Thanks, I'll check

I have a huge pile of new fuses at work so swapped them all out ;)

Didn't there used to be a bodge where you put a screwdriver across the solenoid?

Years ago I had something similar on a GS1000. That turned out to be a badly corroded live lead coming off the battery. If you haven't done so already it's worth checking the connections to the fuse box or any other wiring exposed to the elements.

The clutch cutout connection just under the lever is also in a prime position to catch all the Winter shit you insist on inflicting on the poor bike. That would prevent the bike starting, but not a total electrical blackout.

Happened on my old 600 fazer too, that turned out to be the immobilzer cutting the electrics.

The favourite suspect at the moment is the starter circuit cut off relay but need a meter to test it which I can borrow from a mate on Thursday or swap with a good one to check

I had a similar problem on a blackbird but it was the common frame 'earth' point being corroded. Cleaning this up fixed all my issues.

Check the wiring near the headstock. I had a few bikes that broke wires where the loom moved when you turned the bars.

My first Multistrada did that so something i am aware of ;)

Update:

Checked the battery again which appeared to read ok

Swapped all fuses to new ones with no effect

Swapped all the relays from my bike onto a working one and all the relays are good so now it was proper head scratching then i noticed that the heated grips also were not working. Reason that is significant is they are wired direct from the battery and have nothing to do with the rest of the electricals.
Connected a charger to the battery to get a reading and it blew the main fuse on the charger so battery seems to be the issue.

Swapped the battery out for an old spare and bike fired up and runs as normal. Checked the Reg/Rec in case its overloading the battery and it seems ok so new battery on order and a lot of meter testing to do to check the components are running at the right outputs

But the bike lives again

Why would a battery blow a fuse?

Dunno, as you have probably guessed i dont know enough about auto electrics

Wrong charge or output?

All i know is as soon as the charger was connected the fuse on the charger went pop

I'd be curious to know. Of the many electrical gremlins I've experienced, having a battery be the cause of a blown fuse isn't one.

It didnt blow any of the fuses on the bike as they were all tickety boo when i checked them ....... only on the charger when it was connected :wtf:
