Honda patents ‘CB4X’ inline-4 adventure-tourer motorcycle
I would have thought an inline 4 would be too flat on the power delivery for this type of bike?
Honda has filed patents for the CB4X that the brand had earlier showcased in the concept form indicating that the manufacturer is likely to bring the production version of the same soon to the global market. The Honda CB4X is an in-line four-cylinder adventure motorcycle focused on the road touring rather than off-road adventure. According to sources, Honda has filed patents for the new ADV at the European Union Intellectual Property Office which closely resembles the Honda CB4X Concept that was showcased at the EICMA 2019.
The CB4X Concept blends the design and styling of sports as well as touring motorcycles and features an upright crossover stance with a LED daytime running lights, sleek LED headlamp, tall windscreen, aerodynamic front fairing, forward hunched & chiselled fuel tank and side fairing, naked engine finished in black, short front fender, scooped seat, a sharp and raised tail section with an aluminium subframe, 17-inch alloy wheels for sharp handling, single-sided rear swingarm, upside-down front suspension, a monoshock at the rear and disc brakes on both ends.
The patent drawing closely resembles the CB4X and appears to be made for the road rather than hardcore off-roading, as the bike comes with a four-cylinder engine more apt for long-distance touring than off-roads as it will be heavier than the parallel-twin and the V-Twins that favour off-road adventure machines. The CB4X, if introduced in the road-going production avatar, is likely to come powered by a 650cc in-line four-cylinder liquid-cooled DOHC engine that powers the Honda CB650R that produces 87 Hp of power and 60 Nm of torque matched to a 6-speed transmission unit with a wet multi-plate clutch.
The Honda CB4X or whatever Honda plans to call it, when introduced to the global market, will rival the Yamaha Tracer 700 in the middleweight adventure tourer segment

Love the look of that (brake discs seem weirdly out of kilter though!), but I worry it will look 67% more shit when it's got a massive plate hanger and some spazzy mirrors

The Crossrunner and Crosstourer were both 4 cylinders, albeit V4's.
The Kawasaki Versys 1000 is an IL4.

Run it under the seat and hide it with the panniers.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 4:14 pmand a massive dustbin exhaust.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 4:13 pm Love the look of that (brake discs seem weirdly out of kilter though!), but I worry it will look 67% more shit when it's got a massive plate hanger and some spazzy mirrors

Have whatever power character you want with an inline 4, it's only a matter of engine timing, you could make all 4 cylinders fire together if you wanted to.

You could do it fairly easily with an old Kawasaki or Suzuki, they have pressed up cranks like a two stroke, so you'd just need to retime the crank and get some new cams made. It'd vibrate like a sex aid.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 4:29 pmReally want someone to do that nowLe_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 4:27 pm Have whatever power character you want with an inline 4, it's only a matter of engine timing, you could make all 4 cylinders fire together if you wanted to.

I think that's a common misconception. Fours are far from flat if they are well tuned. My Zed will pull strongly from below 30mph in top gear, most of that is down to short gearing and an ecu flash to sort the fueling. Any twin I've ever ridden needs to be in the sweet spot with the revs and that won't be low down. Most twins are well grumpy at low revs.
Regarding the Homdah,I quite like that, much better looking than most fugly adv bikes. I can't see how it'd be any use off road, though.

It's to compete with the new Triumph Trident based adventure bike.

When I was doing the 3 slow sighting laps on trackdays, I often just left it in 6th for a giggle.Skub wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 4:39 pmI think that's a common misconception. Knowing Honda, it'll be a lovely smooth engine but totally devoid of any character.Skub wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 4:39 pm

Gotta disagree with you on the twin thing though, it's all a matter of fuelling and the engine size, something with pistons the size of paint tins will never be really smooth, I've ridden TL's that have been properly set up with a PC and they're a different bike to standard and would literally pull from tickover.
I'm getting hints of a 21st Century TDM with that thing, like the answer to a question that nobody has asked, and you can bet your life Honda will suck every bit of excitement out of the engine. It'll probably do everything perfectly, but be like a CBF600, dull as ditchwater.
