Just wondering about insuring these sort of things.Skub wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:06 pm For you big guns.

My GSXR1000 has a real value.
Old bikes haven't a real value as such so what's the payout if it's stolen?

70 years old, 7 owners and 163 miles on the clock*.....and someone has still put bar end mirrors on it.
(I assume that they're not a factory item).
*What an absolutely criminal waste of a bike.

For me, old bikes and old cars are nice to look at, but I don't want to own one.

I would think anyone owning a bike like this would have an agreed value with the insurance company ?!Yorick wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:13 pmJust wondering about insuring these sort of things.Skub wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:06 pm For you big guns.

I hope nobody takes that mileage claim seriously.Count Steer wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:15 pm 70 years old, 7 owners and 163 miles on the clock*.....and someone has still put bar end mirrors on it.

At least my bar-end mirror is chrome and fairly period-looking!

Even my auld Triumph (1969 and worth about 10% of this ^^^) has an agreed value with the insurance. It's pretty much the standard for this sorta thing.Jody wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 1:06 pmI would think anyone owning a bike like this would have an agreed value with the insurance company ?!Yorick wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:13 pmJust wondering about insuring these sort of things.Skub wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:06 pm For you big guns.

Usually based on what it would cost to replace (or what it would sell for)...err...same as any other bike/car?Yorick wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:13 pmJust wondering about insuring these sort of things.Skub wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:06 pm For you big guns.

I'd prefer to buy a few Kawa triples for that money. I love the looks of old Brit iron like that, but I've no connection or desire to own one. The British industry was dead by the time I started biking in 1972.
I wonder when those with a nostalgic connection to vintage bikes shuffle off, will the prices also take a tumble due to lack of demand?

Re: How about a £100k Investment?
You'll get a receipt when you buy it though. You can also potentially show the insurance company what other vehicles of the same type have sold for. Glass's guide is just a convenient short hand innit, the people who write that have to get their data from somewhere too.
I think it costs me about a fiver extra to have an agreed value on my insurance. You often have to send pics and stuff in, or even get someone to come and look at the vehicle. My particular classic is a pretty common model though, so a few photos sent in a few years back was all it took.

That's why insurance companies have valuers. (There's also the 'Comprehensive Vintage Motorcycle Price Guide 2020/21 edition' and others + they'll have contacts at specialist auction houses).Yorick wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 3:23 pmThere's no Glasses Guide for historical vehicles.Count Steer wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 2:26 pmUsually based on what it would cost to replace (or what it would sell for)...err...same as any other bike/car?

I've been thinking this, dad was a founder member of the Brough club over 60yrs ago & brother is the keeper of a non original ss80/100* & from what I heard/seen prices of Broughs have not been so stratospheric recently.I wonder when those with a nostalgic connection to vintage bikes shuffle off, will the prices also take a tumble due to lack of demand?
* which I rode recently on my rider policy, so zero comprehensive insurance if I'd stacked it
