First full-size driverless bus trials to begin in Scotland

The UK's first full-sized driverless buses will begin trials in Scotland this week with a view to having passengers on board later this summer.

Road testing of the autonomous single-decker vehicles gets under way on a 14-mile route between Edinburgh and Fife.

The two-week trial, on a route that crosses the Forth Road Bridge, is the latest in a series held in the UK.

A driver will still be on the bus as a back-up initially for passenger safety and to comply with UK legislation.

It follows previous trials of smaller, shuttle buses in London and Birmingham, while another driverless bus pilot is also due to start in Inverness later this year.

It'll be like a supermarket auto-checkout system, if it senses an extra weight coming on board , and no payment, then it'll refuse to move and display a large sign:

I can see 1 major problem. In this neck of the woods oldies (even older than me) and thickies (even less tech savvy than me) are the only ones to use buses. These are the people who clog up a supermarket self-service till for an hour at a time.

I can't see this doing much to improve bus timetable regularity.

ISTR that few systems that hit the road in production cars were specifically tested with PTWs either. There have been a couple of high profile crashes including a rear-ender in Norway where a female rider was seriously hurt when the Tesla failed to detect the bike in front slowing.

Not a production system, and I certainly wouldn't want to be doing the riding.



The good thing is that the truck's brake lights come on when the bike moves in front.

Even the concept of 'platooning' trucks bothers me. If say 4 trucks are platooned, running nose to tail and relying on sensors in the lead truck, can you imagine the time that another manual truck will take to overtake 4 in a row? Last week I was in a tailback for abut 5 mins on the A30 while one truck tried to overtake another with a 0.2mph speed advantage, which promptly disappeared when we reached a hill.

I saw the HELM convoy (3 trucks) on the M5 during one of the trial runs.

There was a fourth HGV - following them more closely than the second and third 'platooning' trucks were!
