I'm not even sure if I can drive her car. I did when we were over in March, but didn't think of the legalities

Re: Spanish Driving Licence
Gov web site seems to say driving on a full EU licence isn't a problem but I'm intrigued as to how easy it is for a non-resident to insure a car that's permanently based in the UK?

Pretty sure you can't. Well -Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 7:06 pmGov web site seems to say driving on a full EU licence isn't a problem but I'm intrigued as to how easy it is for a non-resident to insure a car that's permanently based in the UK?
I have a friend that was resident here (due to work). He had a car in the UK registered in his name but the insurance company said he couldn't drive it because he wasn't a UK resident. He has a UK driving licence, but because he wasn't a UK resident, they said he wasn't legal to drive his own car

Re: Spanish Driving Licence
+1 to all this.
As it goes, the UK and Malta did reach an agreement, but there was a period when that was not guaranteed. I swapped my Gibraltar (British) driving license for a Maltese one as soon as I could, because I had no illusions this sort of thing could happen.
As the icing on the cake, when my ten year residence permit expires, I'll get to join the same "third country national" queue as the Libyans and whoever else arrived here on a dinghy. Brits are definitely not more special than anyone else, not anymore. Thanks, Brexit.

Re: Spanish Driving Licence
I'm just fed up with the miserable atmosphere (which admittedly i'm now adding to) in this place, it's just constant moan moan bitch and whine. The bike content is down, the happiness content is down, no-one seems to ride bikes any more and everyone just wants to whinge all the time. It's honestly just really grating on me. I'm sitting here wondering "why the fuck do i even bother posting here" let alone owning, funding and Admining the place.

Don't know what he does, but my friend from here could drive cars in the uk, he just couldn't own and insure one. If it was in his wifes name (she wasn't a french resident) then he could have driven itMrLongbeard wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 10:33 pmThat old American fella, of TRC days seemed to manage it with his bike he kept here.

It started out as just chatting about what's happening here and the missus needing to do her bike test.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 8:22 amI'm just fed up with the miserable atmosphere (which admittedly i'm now adding to) in this place, it's just constant moan moan bitch and whine. You act like it's a football game we lost and should get over.
It's not.
It's a fundamental change to our lives, dude, and the consequences are still rolling in as you see in this thread.

Re: Spanish Driving Licence
Not sure there's a lot of actual whinging Yes there was a vote. The then government basically made almost the shittest deal possible and due to lack of thought, negotiation, ability to care, have made life quite difficult in some ways for people who previously had the right to live and work anywhere in Europe.
For instance, on a UK passport, it's really hard to get the paperwork to do my job - to the point that companies are looking to employ EU passport holders. If I hadn't received my Irish one before the last winter season, not many (if any) people would have employed me for that role (due to the Swiss, but they can only be dickish about it because Brexit enabled them to be)
So, whilst some could read it as whinging, for me there is a lot of stating of facts. Might not be good to read for some. But things are most definitely more difficult for people who moved to europe pre brexit and its a lot harder to do the same now.
I'm not sure that many of the people that voted for brexit realised how much we, as a nation, would lose
As for the moaning and whinging - there's a shit ton more depressing, miserable, antagonistic stuff in the political threads!! I'm not sure any of the above was moaning, but then to me it's fact. Maybe people that write all the stuff you've said don't think they are doing that either?
I'd post more if I had anything to post about. Often when I try to get involved and comment or ask a question there is no response or a one liner that doesn't help with the question (maybe because I have't really ridden for 5 years or maybe I don't have the knowledge to join in?). So I've almost stopped trying to interact on 'conversations' as I feel that maybe people would prefer I don't!! So I just post boring shit about being broken, mobility disadvantaged and try and put a positive spin on what I can!!

LOL you lot left the bloody country.... You don't get to say what's right and wrong any more. You picked up and left because you didn't like it here, now you're moaning that you can't do what you want when you grace us with your presence every 3 years.
Yorick accpeted his fate, left and went full Spanish (well, sort of ) and he's gone all in and jumped onto and embraced it, both good and bad... That i like.

They are expats, their favourite pastime is whingeing about the UK.
I can't say I've noticed much difference and the little I have noticed seems to balance out both ways.

Re: Spanish Driving Licence
I'll do the same. But nationality here will take up to 3 or 4 years. And I can't apply until end of October. So what else can I do? I can't change my licence until the end of June.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 8:30 amLOL you lot left the bloody country.... You don't get to say what's right and wrong any more. Equally, I didn't come here because I didn't like it there, just that here gave me an opportunity I didn't have in the UK. I wouldn't move back now, but that is because of Brexit!!
I'm sad because it is so difficult now for employers and seasonaires here now. Both my niece and nephew wanted to come and do seasons. Here's hoping the various governments will have got their shit together by then!!

Any children in your family want to do seasons? Or 'work' their way across europe?

Re: Spanish Driving Licence
It's not about what I can or can't do when I am in UK. Although while we're on that, NatWest closed my 20 year old account recently - guess why?weeksy wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 8:30 am LOL you lot left the bloody country.... It's about the fact (for example) that I now own a house in a country where if I lose my job, they can kick me out. How's that for life security?
Like I can just ask for the permanent right to residency and they'll give it me? Nope, not any more.
I've been given ten years post-Brexit grace, and after that it's in with the rest of the 3rd country nationals.
With respect, you're not in this situation and you know nothing about it.

@Yorick seems to be a permie there ?
Why can't you get residency ?
However, as i said.... You made the choice to leave... You could come back i'm sure.. but you don't want to (so it seems)

Re: Spanish Driving Licence
Yorick got his residency while it was easy, because UK was in the EU. I arrived here too late for that.
You're right, I don't want to come back. But I also didn't ask to have the rug pulled out from under me.
I'd ask for you to stop thinking it's some kind of game where we lost and you won. It's not, it's people's lives that have been changed, often in a really big way.
As you'll see above, I am "dealing with it". I did apply for the ten years grace residency in good time, I did swap my license in good time and I have done a bunch of other stuff that was foisted on me. But I don't have to be happy about it.
