I plan routes on myrouteapp and then download them to my Garmin. It is IMO the best route planning software incorporating Google maps, Google Street View, Here maps (Garmin), Tomtom maps and it has a "compare" tool so you can see how both Garmin and Tomtom will interpret the routes so you can add extra way points for accuracy.

myrouteapp has a satnav app though I've never tried it.

I only mention it because I was looking at a device that links smartphones to BMW magicwheel (the left hand controller wheel thing). it was listed as one of the compatible apps and the reviews were raving about it.

My old TomTom 400 has a similar function where you specify a destination and it makes you a 'loop' there and back based on how twisty you want it.

It looks like on Scenic you can just give it a distance you want to do and a rough direction and it'll make you a loop.

I've got it downloaded just in case my Garmin goes tits up and or Google Maps goes tits up

I tried using Calimoto and their planned route looked good. Then I downloaded a GPX (I think) and uploaded to Basecamp, shite - missed out lots of Twisties in preference for the shorter route. Then I tried uploading to Ride with GPS, not much better. Then I gave up ( hours later).
Really frustrating, I've got a BMW Nav IV and a Garmin Montana, pretty much without fail they don't actually follow the route I've plotted for one reason or another. Probably pilot error but I can't see why. I've been playing with these things since my first Magellan GPS2000 so hardly a novice.
Breadcrumb trail seems pretty much faultless but entails too much watching the screen to a avoid lots of turning round

Can you not use the BMW motorrad connected app? There's satnav options on there and you can specify no motorways etc. I haven't used it on my beast of a BMW maxi scoot yet though, so not sure how good it is

Nope, my new bike is a 2016... the year before they switched to the TFT dash with bluetooth, which is a requirement for the app... you also have to pay a subscription for it I think.

Ahhh!! I have the app and the TFT (which is bloody clever), just did a route and was able to avoid motorways and ask for a 'winding' route as opposed to a 'faster' one, which looked ideal. Also, I haven't got a subscription for it, maybe that will kick in at some stage as the scoot's only 13 months old? Still, all no good to you.

If you do use the Scenic app, update as I'd be interested to see how you find it.

Calimoto does exactly what you're describing. You choose a distance and either twisty or sweeping - or something like that - roads and it generates a looping route from your position.

The free version only includes one region and a maximum route distance. The full version's around forty quid per year.

The problem with Calimoto is that it's psychopathic about finding "little" roads regardless of the wider environment. It'll drag you around the little back roads of a large town wasting time instead of just taking the obvious quick road through. Ie it's stupid. Some more development and it might be ok.

Also the OpenMaps source material is often not very accurate on the details of little roads, i tried it a couple of years ago and the number of junctions where the priorities were completely wrong in the app was quite surprising.

That does sound rubbish. I've only ever used it in the wilderness, it's good for that.

I use the connected app sometimes which is a bit hit and miss.

If you know the roads you might think ‘why the hell is it sending me there’ especially on the winding setting.

But it can work if you want to go somewhere different.

I thought I knew them all, but that's a new one to me... it seems very easy to use - I've just uploaded the GPX files from my rather elderly Garmin Oregon and they are instantly visible.
