I passed my test after riding round for a year. I was taxed and insured in my mates name, who at one time I had to ring and get his details as I'd destroyed the bike and was waiting for a policeman to come chat.

All worked out nice. I gave him the salvage for free, I got a new bike on his insurance and we rode round together after I'd got a licence

When I was racing, I had pals with same bikes so copied their plates if I needed the bikes for the road.

Looking at this from another angle. That of the brother, perhaps.

A good mate (dead now) comes to me and asks for the lend of one of my bikes. He had been banned for 15 years for various misdemeanours,so obviously had no licence or insurance.

I told him he could have the bike, but if he was collared,or had an accident and the polis came knocking at my door, then I'd make it plain he took the bike without my knowledge,so he'd be done for taking without permission and riding with no licence or insurance,on top of what other fuckery he was up to. We were very clear on that. I wasn't taking one for the team in any way.

True to form he fucked up (I'll be quiet on the story) and the polis came knocking. I did exactly what I said I'd do,as he knew I would. He did time for that escapade and we were still good mates right up until he died.

The dude with the Suzuki did a silly thing probably without thinking of the consequences for him or his bro,so he'll have to suck it up,but I do have a certain sympathy. I haven't the stones to pretend I'm horrified.

In that situation I'd have told my mate to jog on.

It's not even a think of the kittens thing, I just wouldn't want his actions on my conscience, however loosely I'm connected. I've lent people vehicles before, but if someone is banned they're probably banned for a reason and I'm not putting my balls in their frying pan...as my old mate used to say.

The OP clearly fucked up in the heat of the moment though, I'm not expecting he went out of his way to be deceptive...just didn't think it through.

I wrote off a mates CBR400 when a Micra pulled out in front of me, which I'd bought off him... but not got round to giving him a penny.

It didn't have an MOT, he didn't have it insured, I had another bike insured which gave me 3rd party cover... as long as he was insured.

I got a producer from the copper who attended. Back in them days you got a producer for everything.

He ticked the the wrong box. Instead of MOT he ticked HGV (something), so when I presented at Donny polis station the woman at the desk just checked my license and sent me on my way.

I guess it's a bit more complicated these days with computers and stuff.

If you were driving around in a car with a gun or a body in the boot, would you do 60+ in a 30?

No. (Not if you have 2 brain cells to rub together).

It might be referred to here as a limit on prosecution time. As Weeksy said in England and Wales any prosecution for speeding offences has to be charged within 6 years of the offence being committed.

In the circumstances laid out then the bloke who gave the false details is looking at perverting the course of justice as it wasnt just a little lie on a whim, he changed the plates and used the details of his brother which the brother can prove wasnt him. Trafpol might not prosecute it but CPS will refer it back to the local force to look into so CID might get hold of it as its an indictable offence as opposed to a summary one.
