An adventure bike of some kind.
A proper bike that can be used off road ( we've got loads of tracks/woods over here to use) and still do a 300 mile day without having to be surgically removed from your butt cheeks.
Budget will be whatever I get for the xsr (£6-7k).
Engine cc 650-1000, max 2 cylinders, proper sized wheels and a 150 mile tank.
Inspire me.

By proper sized wheels I assume you mean 17's?
They'll not be that great off road.
If you don't need to take a passenger too often then a Wee-Strom might fit the bill, might just be able to get a KTM 1050 for that kind of money (has a 19 inch front wheel tho').

Tenere 700 has got to be worth a test ride. CP2 engine is a peach!

A bike that's comfortable for 300 miles and that can be used for proper off road doesn't exist, I don't think there's one that's comfortable for 30 miles that'd be capable of getting round an MX track.

But I bet a KTM 690 Enduro would have a damn good try.

True, I misread the first post, any Enduro bike is capable of a 300 mile day, it's your arse that is the limiting factor, I've done 300 miles days on a DRZ400 and on an XR600, the XR was better comfort wise, but still painful.weeksy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:52 pmLol that's not what he asked for.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:50 pm A bike that's comfortable for 300 miles and that can be used for proper off road doesn't exist, I don't think there's one that's comfortable for 30 miles that'd be capable of getting round an MX track.

Right back on subject, bike capable of riding unsurfaced tracks, pretty much anything with an upright riding position, spoked wheels are better at absorbing knocks, you only need knobblies in mud or soft sand, you don't need long travel suspension for dirt tracks unless you're going fast. The original BMW R80GS would be ideal, but they seem to have morphed into over weight mega tourers, I'd go a bit left field with something like the old Triumph trail styled bike, or a Royal Enfield.

Ditto the old Africa Twin (not the new big lump). One of our old number rode to Chernobyl and back on one and they're fine on tracks of various levels of off-roadyness. Most Paris-Dakar type bikes could be made comfy and they off-road all right.weeksy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:52 pmLol that's not what he asked for.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:50 pm A bike that's comfortable for 300 miles and that can be used for proper off road doesn't exist, I don't think there's one that's comfortable for 30 miles that'd be capable of getting round an MX track.

My contribution is - not a BMW F800.

Just had a look at REs website, the Himalayan is like a modern day MZ ISDT bike, just needs a tool bag on top of the tank.

Comfort is subjective.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:50 pm A bike that's comfortable for 300 miles and that can be used for proper off road doesn't exist, I don't think there's one that's comfortable for 30 miles that'd be capable of getting round an MX track.
I did Gloucester-waltham abbey and back (long story) on a ktm 250exc s/m and gloucester-rome non stop on a fzs1000.
However, i did not stipulate a x'er, but a bike that can be used off road. I've competed on a TS125x in the past, and didnt come last;)

Re: So, it's decided then. The replacement for the XSR9 will be
I’ve had an Africa twin, tenere 700 and 1090 KTM adventure. The tenere was a bit wee and not great build quality. The engine I liked so much in an MT07 wasn’t as good and wasn’t great off road as it felt weak. Thing is for us mortals using these bikes off road we have to go carefully and at a sensible pace. The 1090 was the road version but still worked well on gravel. The AT was great, although heavier than the T7 I preferred it’s feel and control off road. If I was to do similar again I’d get the DCT version which a mate had then all you’ve got to do is point and go, as above they work off road but take some riding and DCT helps with that. The build quality on the Honda was superb too.

I'm sure you already know this but there is no unicorn bike out there that'll be brilliant on road and brilliant off road. I sold my mt09 last summer with the same idea as you ,but have still not bought anything to replace it.
Depends on what type of riding you realistically see yourself doing most of I think .
Best all rounders in my mind are tenere700 or KTM 790 adventure, but there are things like the Africa twin that would still do off road but be better on road.
Then there's the ktm690 enduro and smaller CRF 300 rally etc that will be much better off road but wouldn't be anywhere as nice for big road .miles.( unless you are content to nimble )
Just my thoughts.

Don't buy a Himalayan if you want to actually go somewhere, you'll either die of boredom before you get there or something will fall off or it will grind to a halt.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 9:02 pmTrue, I misread the first post, any Enduro bike is capable of a 300 mile day, it's your arse that is the limiting factor, I've done 300 miles days on a DRZ400 and on an XR600, the XR was better comfort wise, but still painful.weeksy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:52 pmLol that's not what he asked for.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:50 pm A bike that's comfortable for 300 miles and that can be used for proper off road doesn't exist, I don't think there's one that's comfortable for 30 miles that'd be capable of getting round an MX track.

Tiger 800/900, there are several versions, some with proper offroad sized wheels.
I had a 800XC, I found it a bit soul less... Oh and it's more than 2 cylinders so I guess it's off the list.
