Ebike, the game changer.... well, for now

For the Spectral:ON CFR, with a total system weight of 100kg (22.2kg bike and 77.8kg rider), it covered 97.2km and climbed 2132m of elevation with the 900Wh battery. With the 720Wh battery it covered 77.7km and 1681m of elevation. Other constants for the test include 70W rider power and 200% of support from the motor (140W).
Charge times for the 900Wh battery are either 5h – 5.6h or 7.2h – 7.8h with the 6A and 4A chargers respectively. For the 720Wh battery charge times are either 4h – 4.7h or 5.8h – 6.3h.

But joking apart, there will be a big step change when new battery technologies filter down to eBikes.

Well, it's brand new and super dooper spec/battery so was never going to be a cheap option. But that sort of battery range is game changing in many ways.
Although, i do wonder how many of the ebikers generally do big miles in a day, or indeed would if they had greater capacity... Or would it still be a 90-120 min thing for most anyway due to time constraint.

I think with a 40/45 mile range I'd be rid of anxiety for 90% of the rides I might want to take it on.
The 30 miles / 3000ft that I'm getting currently means rides are max 3.5 hours rather than all-dayers even using eco only.
I may have only ridden 21 miles on Sunday on the non-e bike but it was nice being out for 4.5 hours even if I was goosed by the end of it.
Another thing that would be nice is a lightweight charger to open up multi day trips with overnights at a place with electric supply.

Wouldn't be surprised to see 1000w Bosch batteries next year.
We have 500w batteries in our Trek Rail 5's which give us over 50 mile ranges, fine for us.
But in the US with far larger distances to travel, especially XC, larger batteries do make sense.

We only use "Eco" with "Tour+" (eMTB Lite) to get up steep hills, and occasionally "eMTB". I've used "Turbo" once on an exceptionally steep slope and almost flipped the bike!!!

Lightest Shimano charger is 600gm with the kettle lead. I suppose it's only half a litre of water in weight but it's quite big and my frame doesn't have any handy spaces for frame bags so it would have to be in the pack.

Cooling mainly, high power devices are bulky so they can pass plenty of air over a decent surface area and get rid of the heat.

Nice but pricey, it gets no further per kw than any other battery, I carry a battery in my back pack so I have 1250wh with me. In the peaks that’s enough for 45-50 miles in turbo mode with 5-6000ft of climbing. Locally without the climbing and in a lower mode it would be good for 50-100 miles. But why have an ebike and not use full power for the speed, if you’re gonna go as slow as a normal bike then get a normal bike

Depends what you want the battery for. We want them so we don't get knackered and waste time pushing the bikes up really steep stuff, then we can ride further.

I think until manufacturers decide on a connector that's pretty unlikely. It's a good idea though.
Probably the optimum solution (especially if there are many options on connections, along with wide variation in demand) might be for the venues just to install mains sockets, like in trains. Then people bring their own charger. Would also avoid PAT requirements and cost of chargers.
But it also suggests that cycle designers need to incorporate a charger carrier.

Nope. But not impossible to design to fit into the bike. Presumably most people would only take them on longer trips anyway.
