Poor Old Marquez

Post by Yorick »

https://www.crash.net/motogp/news/99924 ... a-highside

Nobody enjoyed it when he was winning by miles. But we don't want to see him wobbling round midpack. He'll pack it in. We want to see him at the sharp end, constantly.

I read his tweets this morning and thought "he's not in a good place". It doesn't sound promising that this highside has caused a recurrence of the vision issues.

He only knows one way to ride. That will always leave him vulnerable to the eye problems forever.

I think Marc could possibly win the odd race and even challenge for another title if he could settle for a few points when things aren't going well. But he doesn't seem to be able to switch off his need to push passed the limit consistently. And I'm guessing it was that which made him so successful in the first place.

But as it is I can see him retiring, which is sad.

He said last week something like, if I'm not consistently top 3, I'm packing it in.

That's not good, at all. He doesn't know any other way to ride than on or beyond the limit which is great when he's fit and healthy, but he's not that any more. He has shoulder issues as well as vision issues and either could finish his career. I guess the question is, can he moderate his style to take the points rather than win or bin? If he can, then he still has the ability to win championships. If not, it may mean a premature retirement.

I was never a fan of him but had to admire his riding and commitment. It’s time he stopped and got on with enjoying life he’ll go down as one of the best.

THe one thing i never want to see is someone with life-endangering/changing injuries from racing... especially some of his stature...

Lets hope he knows when it's time to pull.

Indeed, this is more than racing. This double vision thing is potentially life changing and he's only young.

How much longer can he keep bashing himself up? There can be no doubt about his talent or his courage, but life will school us all eventually.

It's a friggin shame.

Can recommend the "MotoGP Unlimited" series on Prime. A look at behind the scenes study of 2021 season. Very well done, and it had me warming to Marques. Hell, he looked old at 29.

I haven't seen the series yet but I've commented on here before about what he's really like (IME) and why I - and the teams around him - rate him so highly as a person as well as a rider. Interesting to hear that's coming across on the programme and will be more interesting to see if it changes people's perceptions of him.
