I find that glass and clear plastic in general often look weird through polarised glasses.

Long pre-computers, finite elements, etc, there was a method for stress analysis which used polarised light and perspex models.

We use a polariscope in the lab when looking at glass articles.

I went to Bath Uni for a look around the (applied) physics dept many moons ago and they had a quite impressive scale model bridge made of perspex for stress analysis purposes.
