Long pre-computers, finite elements, etc, there was a method for stress analysis which used polarised light and perspex models.
I remember seeing a photo of a crane hook under load.
Google images suggests it's still a useful method!

Everyone who's done A-level physics in the last 50 years has seen that photo!

It was the company my dad worked for that developed it. The image was in the company's staff magazine.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Mar 31, 2022 2:43 pmEveryone who's done A-level physics in the last 50 years has seen that photo!
And, yes, over 50 years ago
Edit They made the centrifuges that 'graded grains for finer flour' too

I went to Bath Uni for a look around the (applied) physics dept many moons ago and they had a quite impressive scale model bridge made of perspex for stress analysis purposes.Horse wrote: ↑Thu Mar 31, 2022 2:37 pmMr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 11:29 pm I find that glass and clear plastic in general often look weird through polarised glasses.

If you want waterproof and warm clothing, buy what mountaineers buy and wear.
Not much crash protection, but there is always a trade off with everything.
Fiel injection has to be my favourite improvement over the last 30 years.

Re: Best bike related inventions
Tyres, brakes, frames and suspension improvements were just evolution.
Not many inventions.
Slipper clutch makes track use better. Not much difference on road.
ABS. Good for road. Not track.
Quick shifter. Gimmick. Right up there with ashtrays.
Wings. Track yeah. Road. See above.
TC good idea. Not to be relied on. See how many high-sides in MotoGP.
