Chains - Well I'll Go To The Top Of Our Stairs!
I was doing a little research into non 'O' ring chains and was thinking back to ye olde times when you could buy a tin of Duckham's chain grease/wax that you would melt in the tin over the kitchen cooker - obviously when your mum was out shopping or disco dancing. As long as it didn't set fire you were okay. Always a good idea to have a piece of wire to lift the chain out and let the molten grease drip off.
And so...while poking about the internet I was surprised/shocked to see you can still get the melt on the stove wax from Putoline!

Apparently, so I beleive, it is quite common to find non 'O' or 'X' ring chains on off road bikes. I am aware that there are lots of discussions on 'O' an 'X' rings causing some drag and a minimal loss in BHP - but that is an entirely different discussion. There is also the fact that that the 'O' and 'X' ring chains being a little wider and could - on some bikes ' foul the engine or parts of the bike.
This is interesting from Renthal.

* I haven't a clue what: "Well, I'll Go To The Top Of Our Stairs!" means or where it originates from but that's how it goes with colloquial expressions. I just know it means an exclamation of surprise.

I hated o ring chains on dirt bikes, the dirt would get inside the o rings and work like grinding paste.

I've got one of those stove top tubs of chain stuff somewhere, it's pretty mucky now tho'
I've boiled older non-o-ring chains in a pan of engine oil to loosen tights links too.

Oddly, I agree with Yorick......it's " the foot of our stairs".

No hard and fast rules on colloquial expressions. Lots of regional variations including age related and family pass downs.

Too much hard thunking for me.
I'm also from the era of 'boil in the can' chain lube and I have to say I rarely need to replace C&S these days, the o ring jobbies last and last.

Re: Chains - Well I'll Go To The Top Of Our Stairs!
The Bonnie takes an 'old fashioned' unsealed chain. It's actually got a (factory fit) system which is supposed to drip engine oil on the chain as you ride along - literally engine oil, it's taken from the same tank. Apparently it's a bit of a chocolate fireguard though.
I've looked at fitting a sealed chain to it, but the additional width means you can't get one in there without modifying other stuff AFAIK. For the few thousand miles a year* I do on it, it's not worth it. I do need to get one of them boily can things though.
*Ha! wishful thinking
