The external cage thing I would have thought would be bad for all sorts of reasons - catching on something in an off; noise?

Mentioned here:lostboy wrote: Fri Mar 25, 2022 10:18 am I thought the rotational stuff had been dealt with by the MIPS system?

The relevant bit being that the Rheon liner deals with both impact and rotation, rather than the two being separate.
Also interesting that Rheon are involved with the brain injury research that's been going on at ICL for several years.

Re: Radically different helmet design
The grill is to prevent a hand or elbow accidentally coming through the face opening. Due to rapidly growing concerns about head injuries and long term effects, te helmet is now pretty much out of bounds in American Football - you can't hit someone in the helmet, and you can't use the helmet to hit someone else... so the protection is against accidental impacts and falls where the head hits the ground.dern wrote: Fri Mar 25, 2022 10:04 am Seems odd that they'd go to so much trouble to mitigate against injuries caused by rotational forces and then stick a bull bar on the front that looks like it was designed to catch on stuff and twist the head on impact.

I'm hoping to have a chat with someone from the research team.Horse wrote: Sat Mar 26, 2022 1:43 pmMentioned here:lostboy wrote: Fri Mar 25, 2022 10:18 am I thought the rotational stuff had been dealt with by the MIPS system?

- analysis, using multi-camera high definition video recordings, of American footballers' impacts to assess forces suffered
- comparing those assessments against hospital records and brain scans
- cresting computer predictions of injury from impacts
- comparing those predictions against actual injuries
- doing the same sort of process for car occupant injuries, using in-car data recorders
- creating a new crash test dummy neck
