Speed triple 955i

Post by BBB »

Idly browsing eBay and have found a potential 955i, highush mileage but looks well maintained from the pics.
If I decide to go and view it what sort of things should I be looking for specific to the bike?

Buyers guides online tend to be a bit generic, look at the tyres are the forks leaking etc..

Can you hear or identify a sprag clutch on starting? Clunk or rattle kind of noise.

That was my thought. Unless those frame covers are hiding a couple of massive dents...

The starter motor may spin a lot but not turn the engine over much.

The later swingarm is Good News, as it probably means the linkage bearings were serviced at the same time, or at least replaced with good used. At the very least, you know the bolt in the swingarm came out relatively recently.

Is it just me, but...

New bars, clocks, indicators, rear sets, swingarm and frame covers = crashed.

Might be worth asking if he has the original parts in case you want to put it back to stock, if they don't have them it's deffo crashed.

I appear to be suffering a bit of budget creep...

Starter motor needs replacing if it's not starting when hot.

I've had the same problem with my Tiger and the starter cost over £400 iirc. Step 1 in the maintenance manual..... To replace the starter motor, first remove the engine.

I didn't and it was fiddly as hell to do, but I managed it in the end

Can also be voltage drop caused by poor quality starter cables, a common issue and upgrade on the 1050's. Also, and funnily enough as I only did this job yesterday on my ST1050, is the brushes wear on the starter motor - £30 kit resolved the issue. Starter easy to remove once the oil line is disconnected, a nightmare otherwise.

Had read about the starter issues, asked the seller if it spins when hot and it does but doesn't fire up and it does. Going to see if I can have a look at the weekend to see if it's a slow spin or possibly another issue.

There was, the old / original ones let water in which sat in the plug holes causing agro / rust etc. It's the reason one of the cylinders on mine had 2 spark plug washers as one bugger down got stuck in place.

But they should be cheap enough to replace if they haven't been already.

Now if you'll excuse me I need a sit down, it's not often there's a bike thread on here that I know shit about
