On this visit I did, it was the advanced rider ahead of me trying to show the advanced instructor how good he was...

... he failed to spot the double bend warning sign on the way up to a blind crest and was still nailing it on his GS as he vanished from view as I backed off. He'd gone straight on and was trying to turn round trailing a barbed wire fence, having just avoided a dip in the river.

Ironic really, as he'd cancelled the course I'd gone out there to deliver to him and his mate that morning, and one of the things I'd picked his mate up for was the need to observe, understand, then react to road signs - he'd set himself up on the outside of the lane on a left-hander (close to the hedge in France) and had nearly been taken out by an emerging driver who hadn't seen him.
We weren't on that trip were we? :D

The 2 blokes that landed in the field apparently managed to hit and kill a cow 🐄
That was Flashtour no.1.
The 2 guys who crashed were both on R1s and had been egging each other on all weekend.
The "corner" they crashed on was pretty much just a kink to the right, but it was a blind entry over a rise, and ALL the visible cues into the corner made you think it was going left.

They charged up the hill at stupid speeds and basically completely misread the corner and went off the road, into the field which was about a 10 foot drop and one of the bikes hit a cow and killed it, one of the riders hit another cow and broke his leg badly.

The funny thing about it is that they were in the middle of the group and because they disappeared into the field, no-one saw it happen, so the group got to Oradour and discovered two bikes were missing!

It’s that time of year, we’re all a little rusty and wary of bigger lean angles.

Just practice being smooth, keep your head up with good obs, avoid big throttle or brake inputs while leant over and your confidence will come back as the weather warms and roads clear themselves of the slippy shit.

Potholes, gravel, farm shit, diesel and the odd sugar beat doesn't fill me with confidence either. Basically, our roads are pretty shite. 👎

Did his insurance company reimburse the farmer?

I can't remember - possibly. This was back in about 2002 or 3.

Flash said that they haggled over the value that the farmer put on the cow IIRC (it was, of course, his best cow). I think they paid him cash but can't be sure. Dunno if it ever made it onto the insurance claim.

I've ridden the 'bends of doom' a couple of times but after the build story up there's a tendency to 'go steady' :D Quite a drop into the field though. Look ma, I'm flyiiiiiiiiiiiing!

Very mundane, this, after the Flash story, but I'd just add that if your tyres are worn, tricol, that can be a factor. I recently replaced worn PR4s with new Road 6s and the difference I've felt in cornering confidence has been dramatic. (As has the difference in thickness of my wallet, but that's another matter.)

Good tip - and check the tyre pressures too, if you've not been riding much over winter!

Ah, the 'just ride it till you fall off then wonder what happened' school of motorcycling :)
