Will Russia invade the Ukraine?

Russia seems very keen on Ukraine giving up, hoping I guess to end it before China does something about the fuck up they have made supporting one country acting against another to liberate oppressed ethnic groups.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says that Russia is ready for talks with Ukraine in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, official Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports.

But he said this would have to be about Ukraine declaring a "neutral status" - which would include "demilitarisation". Russia has all along wanted Ukraine to rule out ever joining Nato.

Ukraine's president has called for talks with Vladimir Putin but there is no indication that he will agree to talks on this basis.

Minsk is significant because it's where agreements were signed to try and bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine's east that broke out in 2014.

By invading Ukraine, Russia's leader is seen as having torn up those agreements.

Earlier Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said no talks could be held until the Ukrainian military lays down its arms.

Why should you use your right to vote and choose who perhaps governs you but the people of Ukraine shouldn't bother? My friend in Dnepre told me some time ago that his grandparents have lived in 3 different countries but have never moved house. They prefer their latest country, Ukraine to both the Soviet Union and Russia. I guess that a Western leaning government gives them more freedom, better standard of living, less worries about a knock on the door in the early hours for putting their opinion in the public domain. You know, little things that selecting who governs you can make your life better.

What standard of living will a long war with Russia give Ukraine, is it worth dying and having everything you've worked for destroyed so that your country might be better off in the future, it doesn't appear to have worked for Syria, Lybia or Iraq.

I guess they may have met far stiffer resistance than Putin expected, or they overstretched themselves by trying to occupy the whole country, or there is stiff internal domestic criticism of Putin from his close circle of supporters, or a combination of these and other stuff such as civilian demonstrations against the war in major Russian cities. Also been reported that over 1,000 Russian soldiers have been killed. Bet Russian military communications are being continuously degraded.

Clearly, some people think it is worth fighting and dying for a better future for the country, their children, whatever. Often it's a civil war (we had one in England that you probably benefit from) and sometimes it's standing against a bullying neighbour.

You clearly don't think that way. I think the longer the war with Russia, the better off in the long run they'll be. If it finishes quickly, Ukraine will still have the threat of invasion dictating their lives. Keep it going, keep degrading the invasion forces and keep Russia bogged down in an expensive adventure and they may get the idea that Ukraine can be their own country.

I think Putin has doubly fucked up.

The young Russian generation uses social media such as Facebook and Instagram.

When going to war Putin could not close down social media because this generation would be on the streets protesting. But by leaving social media available the social media generation are able to see for themselves what the armed forces are notionally doing in their name.

Same applies to many of the Russian soldiers.

So he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.

IMO - Putin has failed, just a matter of time.
