In they go

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60468237
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops into two rebel-held regions in eastern Ukraine, after recognising them as independent states.
Footage released overnight appeared to show Russian military vehicles heading towards the Ukrainian border.
Russia said the troops would be "peacekeeping" in the breakaway regions, which it has backed since 2014.

Today I saw 2 Canarian soldiers. I don't think we're gonna be invaded.

I’d just like a few months off from not feeling as though the world is going to end.

I can absolutely see this from t’other side btw. Look at the American approach to foreign policy and the false flag incidents of the last 100 + years and you can even become sympathetic to Russia.

That said, Putin is weapons-grade mental. I’m more worried abou MAD now than I was this time last week.

I dunno, I do kinda have to admire Putin for his shear don't-give-a-fuck-what-you-say-ness.

Plus, you know, man loves a good photo op.

Listening to R4 the military guy they were talking too said the Russians train regularly to use nuclear weapons in battles. Also the gungho-ness their press seem to have regarding using nukes makes me think they have forgotten the damage they can do.

Saw the ad for that. 'Wanted, 12 female models, no taller than 4ft 11in'.

Stock market took a bit of a drop this morning....then thought, 'No shooting yet' and went back up again. Looks like oil shares have gained a bit. With all those tanks, wheat might take a bit of a bashing over the next few months.

I wonder what's going to happen when Putin pushes into those 'newly independent' areas that aren't actually under the control of the Russia supporters? It's a bit like Notts and Derbys go rogue then declaring that all England is the same.

A lot of the Russians who live in the Ukraine know much better off they are not being part of Russia.

PS. Putin doesn't really expect western tanks rolling across his borders. His worry is internal and he has more to fear from his own people than from anyone else. He needs an economic buffer of poverty stricken states around him. If Russians are living cheek by jowl with ex-USSR-type people clearly enjoying better prosperity, health etc etc they might be inclined to go :hmmm: When, for example, Romania has greater economic growth, a higher GDP etc than Russia, as it does, his first job is to stop his own citizens knowing about it and comparing lives. Crimea/Ukraine were the easiest first steps but that's probably testing the waters.

So, his actual worry probably isn't NATO at his doorstep, it's visible prosperity of the immediate neighbours.

I thought the USA had said they'd make up any shortfall in gas with LNG shipments. Two birds, one stone, cut Putin's income and ship less to energy to China. (Not convinced that there's the infrastructure to deal with that quantity of LNG though).

Every evening at bedtime?
Pretty sure it's been suspended, rather than being shelved. Which means bugger all really, as far as sanctioning Russia is concerned.

Indeed - the Germans have an odd view / relationship with the Russians - it's as though they fear the worst and plan for the best. Why on earth would you put you energy supplies in the hands of Putin....

AFAIK it doesn't even have a port capable of accepting LNG deliveries, instead having to rely on a port in the Netherlands. The rush towards renewable energy, while turning their back on nuclear, may come back to bite them in the very near future, while France has become the largest exporter of electricity in the world thanks to its nuclear capacity. Even Bulgaria manages to produce a large electricity surplus from its nuclear plants.

One of Merkel's legacies has come home to roost with a vengeance, aided by the Greens, and courtesy of Fukushima and Chernobyl. I'll bet Putin can't believe his good luck.

Germany doesn't have one. Not a one. (It has one in the planning stage. Great resilience planning eh?). In theory you can gasify and feed it in almost anywhere - (even here and push it through the Interconnector) into the mainland network. Not quite as easy as it sounds though and the further you push it the more gas you waste. Norway may become their new best friend.

Putin sounds like Pietin. Hmmm

Is Shandyman planning all this?
