Homda CB750 Restomod

I've never been a fan of Honda's wheezy old CB750 lump,but thought this was quite tastefully done. Modern touches but not intrusively so. Aside from the bar end mirrors,they need to go.

That's ok.
I'm not a big fan of USD forks on old bikes but those don't look too bad. Wavey disks can go.
Cut down mudguards look ok and I like the 4 into 4 exhausts
I also like bar end mirrors but they need to be above the bars, not below

They've moved it to between the headlight and top yoke

At first I didn't think he'd done much to it, which I suppose is the point of restomods, but there's quite a lot, Kwak forks, different swingarm etc. Delete the wibbly disks and the armpit inspection mirrors and it would look even more original at first sight.

What's the expected benefit of USD forks? It's another of those things that come up regularly and I haven't a clue why one format is any better than the other. I could guess at lower moving mass gives better/faster response but that may well be bolleaux.

Less unsprung weight and more strength in the yokes

The part of that fork that's in the clamps is stiffer, there's less stanchion, etc...

However they're heavier. Tadao refused to fit them to his Fireblade's because they were heavier.

I can't see an electric starter, are they kick only?

I've never had a kickstart 4 pot, but they've got to be loads easier to kick over than a big single, even if it's got a 180 crank it's still only 400cc to kick over.

According to the blurb they were the first mass produced bike to feature electric start.

Maybe it was optional or they fitted them on Merkin ones but knew that us UK types are all he-men kick gods and would laugh at such fripperies.

I think the unsprung weight is higher but the improved rigidity makes up for this.

I've had a dig around and there's some confusion. The rigidity thing is consistent. Most say the unsprung weight is reduced a little - but even an ounce makes a difference in a dynamic situation. Some say it isn't. Some say that feel and rider comfort is improved.
Can't find anything definitive but, as ever, there are fans of both and some argy bargy.

The CB750 wasn't the first mass-produced bike to have an electric start - my 1966 Honda CB77 (305cc) had an electric start and so did the 250cc version (CB72). But it was quite a few years later before manufacturers dispensed with the backup kickstart option. It was always a lottery whether the leccy start would work or not on my CB77.

Yeah, unless I'd had one I wouldn't have remembered. At first people treated them with some suspicion - extra weight and the first offerings weren't particularly reliable.
