Cornering. Left or Right Which Do You Prefer?

Post by IanB »

Phoenix's thread about twins & cornering got me thinking, do I prefer left or right handers? It doesn't matter on the road but on a track day I much prefer taking a left hander. It just fees so much better to me, I feel more relaxed on the bike & in more control.

Anyone else got a preference, or is it just me?

Lefts I find far easier, this is purely psychological as I had a massive off at Gerard’s at Mallory Park and ever since I’m not to great at right handers, on track anyway.

I was noticeable quicker on left hairpins than right. Think it was coz my wrist was at a strange angle when hanging off.

Left. I do tight roundabouts gingerly but when in Euroland am whizzing round them.

I had a bit of a theory about this. Not entirely sure it worked out though.
Right handed but kind of preferred lefthanders.

Or at least thats the way I used to slide pushbikes round when I was a nipper.
Now? Not so sure.

My theory was. If going left tight you will want the left arm to me more rigid keeping the bars pointing to where you want to go but right would meant holding not so tight due to throttle making you prefer left handers. Totally shite but works in my head

On the road from a safety point of view I prefer right,as if things go wrong & you hit something at least what you hit will be static. If things go wrong on a left hander you're heading into oncoming traffic.Obviously the opposite applies sur le continent.
Taking the safety aspect out of things I've no real preference for left or right,I just prefer being able to see through the bend, not been on the track for years but I've thrown it down the road on both left & right corners,on the road it was mainly roundabouts...

In reality you don’t want your arms to be rigid at all whilst cornering.

On the road always prefer / smoother/ lean further on left handers.
On the track, buggered if I know I've never been on one.

Prefer right. Think it's the hedge thing vs oncoming. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Right handed and prefer left hand bends.

(Probably to do with 'peg weighting' ).

Interesting. I've always preferred left handers - wonder if there's any correlation between preference and general handed-ness? I'm mainly right handed (writing etc).

That was my general idea, unfortunately with the small sample size my results were inconclusive.
Might just need greater numbers and remember, even negative results are worth keeping track of as they bracket the good ones.

Wonder if it’s the road camber making some people feel more comfortable with left hand bends?
