so I'm going to take him shopping over the next couple of weeks and see if he likes a Speedy or Seamaster.

The last of the hesalite speedys are kicking around now so might be worth grabbing one, if only because the boxes are a lot nicer!

Took delivery of a used Speedy, I know its not a Moonwatch but a simple clean looking daily wearer....

I've had the offer of a CK2998 Speedmaster on the table for a while, sorely tempted. Tried to resist but struggling

Ti is really good for that. Mrs D has metal allergy too, pretty much any form of stainless gives her a reaction. That's why she has titanium engagement and wedding rings.

I have the same wedding ring design as her, but in solid Zirconium. I partly chose that cause it should be OK even if I develop allergies later in life.

A guy I work with - one of the test engineers - has a rubber wedding ring for that very reason.

At the start of lockdown I used a website tracker application for watches (Chrono24), you input what you paid and the details, etc, then it tracks their value in the used market and gives you the average selling price and how yours have done against it.

I put a couple in that I bought last summer just out of interest - anyway, I've just logged in and the appreciation averages out at +26%
I don't know of many easy investments to make that pay those sort of returns, e.g. if you'd dropped 30k into them you'd come out with 7.6k appreciation after about eight months, although selling them might be a hassle.

A year later, that percentage increase ranges from 47% to 198% increase.
I was going to C&P the tracker but you can see the values and someone would take it the wrong way, but you can do your own maths.

I'm running at 31% average gain at the moment. I will try use this on the missus to justify another purchase..

I've had an Omega Seamaster for 22 years now and for probably 18 of those it was my daily wearer, yes it had picked up a few scuffs and scrapes but sending it off to Omega for a service every 3 or 4 years, it would come back like new. Recently had a new bezel fitted due to it being whacked in to a wall but still looks as good as new. Doubt I'd have any problem selling it for the market value.
Agree with the whole being wary thing - dependent on where I'm going depends on the watch I wear. My current daily wearers are either a Timex Expedition or a Huawei smartwatch

Sadly it's probably not a goer as it's huge an I have dead thin, scrawny wrists like someone who's never done a proper day's work in their life and gets by by occasionally turning up the Home Counties accent and bluffing it.

It is tempting though. All those maps! In a watch! With an orange strap!

Not really, a balance sheet doesn’t comprise of only cash.

I'm always having this argument with our CFO, to me a balance sheet isn't a very useful measure unless you're about to use the information to actually do something. An asset on your balance sheet can go up or down by any amount you want, but unless you're going to use that information to take a position (buy, sell, loan on the strength of it, get someone to invest in you, sell a bond, create some sort of derivative transaction, etc) then it's just a snapshot in time and little more than a curiosity.

They're also very distracting and lure people into panic, all my current (watch) balance sheet is doing is tempting me to sell

Of course it is. Any type of wealth/asset is the same, be it shares, property, gold or cars. The value can go up or down. This even applies to cash (as we’re finding out at the moment due to inflation).

And yes, a BS is a snapshot in time, that’s all it ever can be. A tool to measure a current position.

Had a bit of good news, I got a call telling me to come and collect the Submariner I put on order about a year ago.
Originally it was ordered for my boy's 18th, but he doesn't want it, so it's going into the bank safe deposit box for now.

I must a traditionalist - I prefer the look of the earlier ones.

But, a lovely thing to have, I hope you get some wear from it.
