Is the front tyre on backwards? I'm not sure but it looks wrong to me.

I actually rather like that... it's the late 70s / early 80s endurance racer look that I so like. I could live without the swirly silver paint line.

A few years back there were some pictures doing the rounds (along with a thread on a VFR forum) of a really well done cafe racer VFR. I've googled, but none of the ones that come up look anywhere near as good. Anyone remember it?

No. I like VFRs but that's horrible. From the LED headlights through the paint to the exhaust hanger. Just wrong

Ironic, really. That generation of VFR (the RC36 Mk 2) was widely regarded as the best looking of all the VFRs. It was the one with the NACA style ducts on the side fairings.

But some muppet thinks they know better and stylistically march it backwards through time by about 10-15 years. It's hideous.

The saving grace is that it wouldn't take a great deal to return it to standard. Aforesaid muppet has only buggered about with the cosmetics. Strip all the purple tat off (and those godawful silencers), acquire some bodywork and a seat and you can re-take your place in polite society. (But not POLITE society, of course).

Only problem is that I guess it's getting a bit long in the tooth nowadays and OE plastics might be getting harder to source?

I guess Ebay will chuck up a few results but it's something to be aware of when buying a bike to change back to standard, plus you need to know how the wiring has been altered as that can be a bloody mission to put back to standard.
