Val McDermid ends Raith Rovers support over David Goodwillie deal

Post by weeksy »

Whilst not the biggest story of the moment, it's added to by a certain Man Utd player who's potentially in a bit of bother too.

I don't know either of the women in the article, but respect to them for what they've done.
The author Val McDermid has said she will withdraw her support and sponsorship of Raith Rovers football club after it signed David Goodwillie.

The striker was ruled to be a rapist and ordered to pay damages in a civil case in 2017.

He never faced a criminal trial over the rape accusation after prosecutors said there was not enough evidence.

Ms McDermid, known for her popular crime fiction novels, has been a lifelong fan of the Fife club.

She was the Scottish Championship team's main shirt sponsor but said that deal would now end as a result of the signing.

The name of the author, who was also a director, is worn on the clubs' home shirt and the South Stand at Stark's Park.

Shame about his surname ...

I guess she has way higher moral standards than the rest of the board.
Unlike Ched Evans , it would appear that he was deemed to be be guilty
(Evans was just a scumbag and so was his co- predator)

I always thought it was innocent until proven guilty.
Does a civil case actually prove it?

I dunno I kind of think that if you've done your time that should be the end of it. "Not enough evidence" for a criminal trial but guilty in a civil case doesn't really do anyone any good really.
I mean he's employed as a football player, he's not being put in charge of a girl's school or anything. I've never quite understood why some sections of society in the public eye (sportspeople, celebrities etc) are expected to uphold moral values on our behalf or be forever held to account.

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill.

The 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said it had been granted more time to question him having previously been given an extension on Monday.

Manchester United have said he will not play for the club until further notice.

GMP said the player was arrested on Sunday after the force "became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence".

It said magistrates had granted a second extension to keep him in custody until Wednesday.

A force spokesman said inquiries were ongoing and a woman was being "offered specialist support".

Video game developer EA Sports said the forward had been removed from FIFA products.

A statement said Greenwood had been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and also suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team packs and Ultimate Draft.

Sportswear firm Nike previously said it had suspended its relationship with the footballer.

"We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation," a spokesman said.

Greenwood, who made his debut for the club in March 2019, signed a four-year deal in February 2021 after rising through the ranks of the academy.

Manchester United said on Sunday the club "did not condone violence of any kind" and had been made aware of the allegations but would make no further comment until the "facts have been established".

How very noble.

As said elsewhere, a leopard rarely changes it's spots.

If you're a nasty bastard, a cunt, a sexual predator, whatever, being found guilty of something in a civil court is hardly going to make you a better person.

So, he's a footballer. Would it be different if he was a copper, banker, male nurse, squaddie, diy house builder . . . ?

Not convicted on one occasion of 3 counts but convicted 3 times. Val McDermid has bigger balls than the board of Raith Rovers, that's for sure.

That's an interesting one. Some on here know my youth, let's just say I wasn't best behaved as a teenager. However, these days I'm a pillar of society.

Civil case in Scotland requires less certainty in cross referencing evidence.
So yes, he was guilty

I think that like me and many others you're simply treading a better path. You're the same person but have learnt some better controls. You're still you and you should be aware of what lies within.

I'm not defending anyone but either the law works or it doesn't. Clearly this author believes it doesn't. Her choice. Better to use ones energy to campaign for broken laws.

As to the job. Yeah you'd assume the type is impacted by a prior crime, a bit, where's it's relevant for a background check.
Obviously.

But yeah not footballers or hod carriers or interior designers or elderly internet trolls. Because that's silly. This is just an excuse for me-me-me column inches and kneejerk nonsense and changes nothing.

Playing Devil's advocate, Mike Tyson spent 3 years inside for rape and he is still a superstar now. Hmm.

She's totally entitled to spend her money however the hell she wants to, or restrict it.
Looks like she's standing by her convictions.

This ^^^.

I wouldn't want my name associated with a rapist either, regardless of how much time they've done. It's one of the reasons I don't sponsor Mike Tyson.
