I think he only posted a picture of it to remind me I could have bought one for £5K in 1996, though I still think the YZF750R I did buy was a better bike to ride.

The OW01 was not a good road bike. But I was involved in BSB around those days and it was a great racer

It's like the R7, a base for a very good race bike, and not really a road bike, though it was better than an early GSXR750 as a road bike, a mate had a YZF750SP, that was very nice round Cadwell, easier to ride than an OW, but not as soft as the YZF750R.

DK Motorcycles were selling new R7's for £15k back in the day.

There was one in the showroom in 98 when I was buying a bike, it was quite a bit cheaper than the 916 I opted for at the time, I did know it would cost a lot to get the power up, went for the better looking option.

I love an R7 just cos I think they look amazing. But I suspect I'd be better off with an R1 in an R7 dress for a fraction of the cost. It wouldn't be an R7 but it'd still look fab.

Whether or not the engines are rubbish isn't really relevant to this bike is it? It's built for a very niche reason with a very particular set of requirements. Namely - compete in WSB as a factory bike while meeting the rules about selling to the public. Anything else is besides the point from Yamaha's POV at least innit?

So yeah, the engine may be a bit shit, but it's gonna get pulled apart and most of the insides replaced when the factory race team get hold of it anyway so WGAF?

Honda being Honda on the other hand went all in and made the SP-1 a 'proper road bike', but that's just them all over.
