New Highway Code rule changes priority at roundabouts

A new rule added to the Highway Code has changed who gets priority at a roundabout.

Previously, drivers were given priority, but that is about to change.

A new section under rule 186 means that road users will now be forced to give priority to cyclists on roundabouts, Manchester Evening News reports.

The rule states: "You should give priority to cyclists on the roundabout. They will be travelling more slowly than motorised traffic.

"Give them plenty of room and do not attempt to overtake them within their lane. Allow them to move across your path as they travel around the roundabout.

AFAIK this is not actually a change to the law - the HC has never been law has it? The various road traffic acts define what the police can actually nick you for, the HC is a handy guide?

The reason I say that is 'cause I've seen this in the news a bit recently, along with the "Dutch Reach" now being the rule as well. But if they were a change to the law (like getting points for using your phone is) I'd expected greater publicity?

Having read Spin's article via that link my take is that the key point is that you need to watch out for cyclists tanking along* on your left as you're about to turn left, or on your right as you're about to turn right, because they have priority.

* Assumption being we're all careful about the slow ones in those circumstances.

My take in the new rules is that peds get to play god just by standing close to the edge of the pavement, and after watching a few youtubes from driving instructors it's the usual cluster fuck.

Long story short, place as many rules and hierarchies as you like in the book as you like, but play silly buggers with a ton plus vehicle and it makes no odds who is in the right or not

TBH i dont mind them much in towns. My main gripe is when they are out on the open roads and deliberately being cunts. They law may be on there side what means shit when they are under a car/van/truck. Just wait till the next fucking dick on a bike races down the pavement tinging his bell. The fucker is on the floor. New rules will only make folk hate them more.

TBF I was taught that when I learned to drive 20 years ago.

Much more recent than some of you...seasoned...individuals for sure, but hardly revelatory.

Many on here drive, ride motorbikes and cycle. It's not always a them and us thing. But i play to the rule, biggest vehicle wins. I would be very wary of assuming right or way on a bicycle.

The HC may not be law but where it say MUST the guidance is based on law. Where it says SHOULD it's a recommendation. But should the Highway COde NOT be followed it leaves you open to a careless driving charge.

The Dutch Reach is also a recommendation. It's NOT law, though it's been reported as such in a lot of click-bait newsrag reports online.

The changes HAVE been widely reported right across the motoring press - I've been talking about them on my FB page for the last three weeks, and even originally reported on the proposals back in when they were being consulted on last year.
