£9.50 for HGV work :O That is ALDI wage for filling shelves what i think goes to closer to £11 after a couple of years.

Yeah unless you greatly like driving, then i'm not seeing that as a great option.

Personally i'd be spending £4-5000 to train as a plumber/sparky and then work for myself. Heck even half training as a sparky and doing PAT testing would pay more than that. You could do worse than have a chat with Couchie about electric vehicle installations for chargers etc which he's clued up about as that's a potentially good plan IMO and i'll bet my arse it pays more than £9.50.

Isn't it normal to have £100K in savings when you're in your 50s?

I'd say, slightly less normal than being in the top half of the average earnings distribution (30+). Particularly for people starting out in life these days who need to find 300K plus 200k loan interest just to buy a small place to live.

It used to be the case that you needed an apprenticeship to be called an electrician, you needed to do extra qualifications after your apprenticeship and at least two years experience post-apprenticeship to be an Approved Electrician, and then an extra year at college and at least 5yrs experience to be a Technician.

Yes and no, and I understand that to someone who came up through the apprenticeship route any other may seem inferior. But remember those schemes were designed to take young lads straight out of school with no life or work experience and gave them both in addition to the actual job skills, which probably can be gained in a course lasting just a few months. I suspect the biggest difference would be the amount of real world OTJ and problem solving experience a person has when they "come out of their time", and I'd hope an intelligent adult could pick that up quite quickly. With a lot of tradesmen going into site work there are plenty of opportunities to gain the experience.

You won't find one round here for <£300k. You may find them in other areas though of course.

You can find some at £250k in Didcot, but not outside of the town and nothing below £250k

You could argue the same about someone training for HGV or a Bus Driver, they don't have the experience to drive busses, but they've never driven busses before so how could they

My instructor told us "You lot might have passed a test, but you aren't bus drivers."

I'm at it over 2 years and only really starting to feel like a proper bus driver. You will make almighty fuck ups, but at least you won't electrocute someone.

Plenty, getting lost is the big one, we have something like 130 routes in Belfast alone, a lot in through housing estates which is fun in a decker without getting lost.

Guess who took the bus into IKEA car park?

Then there's hitting street furniture, tree branches, missing stops because a hedge has grown round it, stuff like that.

There's an 11 foot bridge near our depot, one bloke took a decker under it. Twice.

Not exactly almighty fuck ups, more like ordinary fuck ups, you should try stopping 50% of imports to the UK for a couple of hours, people get distinctly waspy when this happens. (I think it cost the company I work for about £150K in lost revenue)

That's more of a service than a living. I looked into it once, didn't appeal, the company loaded the upfront costs and you were self employed paying your own insurance and bike costs and not earning if you weren't training.

Update...

Officially released from my 26 Yr job on October 9. Started new job on September 15, so had no tax relief for the first few weeks but once p45 passed over all good. All days 8 till 4. Mod support worker, basically warehouse work, but an absolute piece of piss. Less money, but I'm of an age and position where I don't need the wage I would of 20 yrs ago. It'll do me.

and the bonus of all this, I've now got a nice pile of premium bonds.
