Wheelie courses

I want to learn how to wheelie, I don't know how to do it instinctively and fancy learning. Are any of the schools that advertise wheelie lessons worth going to?

Dunno how good they are but Stunt Asylum look like they know what they're about and use bikes with an anti-flip device. They do stand-up wheelie sessions too. (It also mentions stoppies but can't see any actual stoppie sessions). They're SE England at a couple of airfields although they may not have access to Dunsfold (where they used to film Top Gear when I watched it) any more.

Turn off any traction control, ride bike in 1st gear, crack the throttle open and lean back at the same time, shut the throttle when you shit yourself (the wheel will be about 6" off the ground first time you do it)

Turn round, go back, pick up pillion.

Just finesse the clutch then hold it at the balance point through the gears.

First time I tried wheeling i failed. But I failed hard.

I prefer to clutch up, plenty practise with it soon becoming second nature, the more you do it the more you get used to the feeling. Works wonders for when you’re giving it the beans on roads that have plenty bumps and crests and the fronts lifting everywhere, you feel much more comfortable with it.

I always preferred to clutch it up in 2nd on my R6,RRW Blade and my DR250...

I know loads of folk who have been on wheelie courses, none of them can wheelie yet they all have a pic of a bandit or such on one wheel. It takes ages to learn and practice and there’s no short cut, get a slow torquey light bike and go practice. If it’s meant for you you’ll soon learn and get a feel for it. If it isn’t you’ll soon learn

I did a day's training almost 3 years ago at Elvington airfield, I can't remember who it was with. They used Yamaha MT09 and MT07s fitted with anti-wheelie bars. By the end of the day I was able to do little wheelies, using the method described by Le_Fromage_Grande above.

When do you progress to a proper bike?

I'm shite at wheelieing with the clutch, it's either a pathetic 3" blip, or it comes up so hard I scare myself .

I also can't change gear on the back wheel, all in all I'm pretty crap at wheelies, made more annoying by having a mate who's good at wheelies, but he's also got a body full of metal work.

If anyone wants some mildly amusing wheelie stories I've got 3 or 4.

Spent a day with Fishman (formerly of Visordown) at his wheelie school many years ago using 1200 Bandits and using the "power" method rather than clutch it up. By the end of the day could hold the front wheel up a decent amount and keep it there till the bike ran out of power in 1st gear and would come back down again

I still cant wheelie properly as Couchy said but i dont shit myself anymore when the front does come up while riding as i know what it should feel like and know it probably wont flip over

I remember on VD, Fishman from The Wheelie School saying if you want to learn to wheelie your bike, be prepared to crash it, cos you will!
